Green Power

"Green power" is electricity supplied in whole or in part from renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar power, geothermal, hydropower, and various forms of biomass.

There are three basic ways to obtain green power:

  • purchase local green power products directly from your local electricity supplier (check with your local utility)
  • purchase green energy certificates
  • generate renewable energy yourself

When you purchase a green power product, you support increased development of renewable energy sources, which reduces the air pollution that results from the burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil, and natural gas). Renewable energy sources also give economic benefits and reduces our dependency on foreign energy supplies.

EPA Green Power Partnership

Use the Power Profiler to find out the mix of energy sources used in your geographical area, the effects of your own energy use on air pollution, and how you can get started with green power.

Green Power Network
Provides up-to-date information on green power providers, product offerings, consumer protection issues, and policies affecting green power markets. Operated and maintained by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory for the U.S. Department of Energy.
