This is the shortest newsletter I've sent for a while--balances out those weeks when they are so long! After taking a week to get to San Francisco and settle in to the apartment that I'll be staying in til mid-June, this past week has been occupied with catching up on projects that got behind while I was moving.

Next week I have some interesting info on vitamin C water filters, what "lead-free" means with regard to dinnerware, and a great hour-long interview I did on household toxics and my new book Really Green.

Debra :-)

really green by debra lynn dadd helps set the record straight on all shades of green

...these days there are an overwhelming number of products for the home that are labeled green, eco-friendly, natural and organic...

Debra Lynn Dadd, dubbed the "Queen of Green" by the New York Times has stepped in to help solve the dilemma with her latest book, Really Green. She breaks it down using understandable language so even a novice to the world of eco-friendly shopping can start making informed decisions. In the book she provides a foundation for defining products that claim to be green, and reviews basic green principles, types of products and even green packaging. Girlawhirl appreciates that Dadd takes in all sides of the green products issue and acknowledges that everyone needs to be comfortable with the choices they're making, because truth be told, even a little bit of green can still go a long way.

Plastic-Free Band Aids

Are there any band aids left that have NO plastic stuck to the gauze part? Adding the plastic originated with the idea that it would not stick to a wound. HOWEVER, as we all know, plastic is a horrible substance in itself (bisphenol A, petroleum-based, etc.) and it's the last thing I would want on my skin, let alone a wound!

Moving - how safe is the region?

Hi Debra-

We're moving out of our condo and into a house soon. I've got moderate MCS so I'm looking for the least toxic house I can find in our price range and general area. I live in northern California, in a small city surrounded by farms and agriculture. We may stay in this city or we may move to a nearby city which borders farms, industrial areas, and the larger Sacramento metropolitan area.

My question is: how can I find out about the environmental safety of a particular region?

I've tracked down basic info online, such as air quality for ozone, particulates, etc. But I want to know things such as what the actual dangers are for living near these specific farms or industrial zones. I'm concerned about pesticides and other toxic exposures, but I'm not sure if my concerns are overblown. I've rejected several good houses because they border the agricultural areas, or are right across the river from the industrial zone- because I get nervous about increased toxic exposure from increased proximity to the potential sources. I don't even know if these fields or industrial areas actually pose any real danger (they could be organic farms or low-impact rice processing plants)! So how do I find out? I don't know where to start or whom to ask. Do you have any ideas?

Thanks! Katie in Northern California

Is it possible to make a gas stove safe?

I read in one of your books and have read elsewhere that it is important to switch from gas appliances to electric appliances if you are concerned about improving health. My daughter has many food and environmental sensitivities and I am trying to make decisions about what to clean up in the house so that she has a good environment for maximal healing. I suspect that she is probably MCS. I saw in on your page about cookware that you seem to have a gas stove in the photos. That got me curious. Is there any way to make it safe to cook with a gas stove by increasing ventilation? Or is this not worth the gamble?
