This past month has been a busy one for me. First I was away for two weeks to go speak at a wellness retreat, then came home to volunteer work helping to organize an event about human rights. Now that all of that is done, I can get back to adding more new things to my websites. So if I still haven't answered your question on my Green Living Q&A blog...I should be caught up this week or next.

Debra :-)

MORE NATURAL BARGAINS AT COSTCO

I had read that Dr. Mercola personally eats lamb he buys at Costco "because it is rasied in Australia on green pastures of grass." So for our Easter dinner, my husband and I bought a boneless leg of lamb from Costco.

I studded it with a whole head of garlic cloves, and roasted it at 350 degrees F for three hours. Then I served it with my honey-sweetened Fresh Mint Sauce. My husband took one bite and exclaimed, "This is the best lamb I have ever tasted!"

It really is the best lamb I've ever tasted too. It's very tender and has a mild flavor. And it's available at a discount price. $3.99 a pound for grass-fed meat is a bargain.

I also noticed they are now carrying Ecos brand natural laundry liquid in large discount bottles.

I just continue to be pleased at the new natural and organic items I find there.

cleaning clogged drains

I remember reading a suggestion to use a mix of baking soda, borax and vinegar to clear slow running drains. I also recall reading that borax is toxic and not to use it.

Could yuu comment on this please?

non-toxic kids utensils & bowls

I know there's several non-plastic sippy cups out there, but what about bowls, forks, and knives for toddlers that aren't plastic? Does anyone know of these items in stainless steel or wood that hasn't been treated with toxic chemicals?

Stinky NEW Wool Rug - what gives?

Hi Debra,

Recently found your site and thought I'd solicit your advice. I purchased an all wool rug from Company C in December, 2006. After the first 6 weeks or so, I noticed a strong "weird" odor coming from the rug. I thought it was just the new wool rug smell. Well, was I wrong! The smell continued to grow stronger to the point I thought I was crazy. I finally contacted the company and asked some questions. Apparently, the rug was made in India, but it is all wool. The customer service rep instructed me to let the rug sit outside in the sun back side up for a whole day if possible to finish "curing" it. What the heck? Is there anything I can do to make the smell go away? We have all wood floors and tile in the house and no bad smell in any of the other rooms. Company C wants to charge ME $200 to ship the stinky thing back to them. Please note, we have no children in the house, only 2 adults, so I know nothing has been split on this rug.

Your advice, please.

Thanks for your great site and keep up the good work!

Flooring: Least Expensive and Least Toxic

We are trying to decide on the least expensive flooring that is also the least toxic. We've looked through all of the information on flooring you have here and have 4 questions:

First, would the aluminum oxide finish on the Lumber Liquidators cork tiles dust into the air at all with friction (walking, sliding furniture)? What about with the acrylic finish on the wood parquet tiles from Lowe's? Does being baked-on mean that the particles of these finishing chemicals are completely unable to become airborne and thus inhaled?

Second, do you or any of your readers know if the Lumber Liquidators cork tiles are made with no or low-toxicity materials? It seems that not all cork flooring is alike, and this does seem quite inexpensive ($.99/sq. ft.) for cork (since it usually is in the $8-$10 range or more). Has anyone used this particular cork flooring from Lumber Liquidators?

Third, has anyone here used the "utility" unfinished wood flooring from Lumber Liquidators, also at $.99/sq. ft.? Can this flooring be used in any room? What about leaving it unfinished?

Fourth, would the yellow woodworker's glue found at most hardware stores work for putting down wood or cork tiles?

Thank you so much, Debra!

Any Thoughts On Imus Ranch Cleaning Products?

Steam cleaner for old, greasy oven?

Has anyone tried using a steam cleaner for an old-fashioned oven with old, burned-on grease? I tried getting steam cleaner reviews on Consumer Reports, but there are no steam cleaner reviews on thier website. I do nontoxic cleaning for people with allergies and asthma, and it's time I tried a steam cleaner for this truly challenging task.
