I'm grateful today to whoever chose April 22 for Earth Day. Having finally finished my tax return yesterday, It's nice to be able to have finished such a material task and can now look forward to celebrating something more fundamental and sublime. I'm almost caught up with posts on my Green Living Q&A blog...so feel free to send more.

EARTH DAY 2007

This Sunday, April 22, is the 37th Earth Day. There is probably some sort of local event in your community you can attend where environmental groups and green businesses will be offering information on how you can "act local" to help the environment. If so, go take a look.

Though I am aware every day of dwelling within the Earth's ecosystems, I like to take Earth Day off or at least set aside some time to honor the Earth as our "mother"--the source of our sustenance--to learn more about her, give something back, or just become more aware of and enjoy her gifts.

Here is a little gift for Earth Day--something I wrote many years ago, and then expanded into a sidebar for Natural Remodeling for the Not-So-Green House: Bringing Your Home into Harmony with Nature by Carol Venolia and Kelly Lerner...

SEEING NATURE

For most of my life, I hardly noticed Nature or even thought about it. Nature to me was off somewhere else, in a park or at summer camp. My world and the world of Nature were two entirely different and separate places.

When I first met my husband, Larry, I was surprised to find that he saw the world with completely different eyes. We were walking in the financial district of downtown San Francisco one day, a street where buildings tower so high, you can hardly see the sky. While my attention was on the store windows, he said, "Look at that bird nest!" Bird nest?!!?!?! I walked down the street and saw only concrete, signs, front doors, people, cars and diamond rings in a jeweler's window. He walked down the same street and saw bird nests, birds, flowers in window boxes, trees in planters, and cats running by. He felt the sun on his hair and the wind on his face. He changed the way I look at the world forever.

Nature is everywhere, in everything. I now see the tree in the wood my desk is made of. The clay of the earth in the bowl I am eating from, veins of silver in my spoon, and the cow that gave it's milk for my yogurt. Nature is all around me, and I dwell within it.

At the same time, Nature dwells within me. My own body as a living organism follows the same patterns of life as all other living organisms. It must take in nourishment and expel wastes, there must be energy and communication and purpose. These functions hold true whether we are looking at the organism of a cell, a heart, a body, a tree, a forest, or a city. Organisms work cooperatively for the good of all, whether they be cells joined to create an organ, organs joined together to be a human body, or individuals working together in a community group for the common good.

Nature operates on huge cycles that run throughout the Earth, connecting each one of us with each other, all other species, the land, and the cosmos. Though water in our homes comes from a tap, we drink rain and snow. When we purchase food from a supermarket, we are eating sunlight transformed by flora and fauna. We fill our own lungs with air that is circulating around the planet, passing through forests and thunderstorms, flying on currents of wind in great cycles from poles to equator.

That we think we are separate from Nature is only a shift of perception. Life courses through our veins just as surely as it rises in the sap of a tree or moves in the delicate wings of a butterfly. Life force is powerful, it is abundant, it regenerates. It is infinite and eternal. And it is present in each one of us.

Coming to know ourselves as Nature is not a matter of trying to become something we are not...no...it is to observe anew what we already are--living beings who have the ability to be aware of and act in harmony with the flows and processes that successfully sustain all life.

Inexpensive Chlorine Removal

My family and I live on a very fixed budget, but at the same time I am concerned about the chlorine content in our city water. I am unable to afford one of those 6-$700.00 water filters. So, I am wondering if there is anything I can add to my children bath water to neutralize the chlorine(or other chemicals)?

Neutralizing a toxic apartment

Hi. I just moved to a new apartment in a new city. Since I've gotten here I've had debilitating headaches everyday. Before we moved in, the landlords cleaned the apartment, including the carpeting (1/2 the apartment is carpeted) with strong chemicals and deoderizers. Though the smell has mostly gone away, I suspect that the chemicals they used are responsible for my headaches.

I know so little about creating a healthy home environment, since this is all new to me, and I have very little money, so I am wondering what I can do about my present situation, given that I'm here in this apartment now, and moving out is not a realistic option at this point in time.

I am switching to non-toxic cleaners, but I am wondering if there is anything I can do about the chemicals they've already used? Will recleaning the rugs and closets with non-toxic products, like baking soda, get rid of the chemicals? Would investing in an air purifier help? Is there something else I can do to get rid of the chemicals and neutralize the environment?

Smell in Comforter-Vinyl casing it comes in?

Hi,
I bought a Liz Claiborne comforter a few days ago, and it smells. I think it's from the vinyl bag it was encased in, but not sure. How many days should I allow for this to air out? Could it be the actual comforter that smells (dyes?)? I think it's from the vinyl bag it came in, but not sure. I have asthma, and i'm in love with this comforter, but can't really use it on the bed until it airs out. The past two days put on bed before I left for it to air out while i'm at work. Help! :)

tried and true help for eczema?

i have a 6 month old who has eczema on his face, arms and hands that are dry, itchy and flaky. it drives him crazy especially at night as he constantly rubs and scratches his face. i do not want to use store bought lotions containing chemicals, so i am looking for a way to make a simple lotion or get ideas on what all natural ingredients might work. the main problem is the itchyness followed by the dry patchy flaky skin. i have been trying different things but nothing has really helped.

Green Fund Raising

I will soon be responsible for an elementary school fund-raiser. I would like to get the school away from the usual "candy and gifts" purchases to more green choices. Does anyone know of a company(s) that offer environmentally sound choices for mass gift or food purchases?

seeking information on non-voc mattress covers

I have recently purchased a new mattress. I believe it has been treated by the new flame-retardant standards, so it probably has formaldehyde, boric acid etc in it. At this time I can't replace the mattress, so I'm looking for ways to block the voc outgassing. Would a mattress cover that fully encases the mattress that contains a urethane membrane attached to a small micron cotton layer achieve this goal? Or would the urethane itself produce voc offgassing? If I need to find a non-urethane backed cover, how small of a micron opening do I want? Any suggestions on where to find this type of cover? Ideally, I'd find an organic cover with a 0.3 micron opening.

Non-toxic weed killer

I recently bought a home with a backyard that needs a fair amount of weeding. I am 7 months pregnant so am not up to doing the manual labor of pulling out all the weeds by hand. I am looking for a non-toxic solution to get rid of the weeds. Are there any products on the market you would recommend?

How long for refinished wood floors to outgas?

I need a new house, and with MCS I have so many limitations it is being quite a challenge. I have found a lovely home, but it had remodeling done about 8 months ago, i.e. new baths, kitchen cabinets (all wood construction), painting, and refinished hardwood floors. The house has been vacant since the remodeling. I haven't been inside yet because they were using plug-in "air fresheners".

Can you give me any help in estimating how long it generally takes for two coats of polyurethane to outgas in a closed up house? I really need to move soon. My current house is making me sicker and sicker.

Response to Costco Lamb

Hello!

I just wanted to write in response to the post regarding Costco's lamb. I called Costco and asked about the beef and other meat. I was told they follow regular FDA rules (which signals a red flag to me) and their suppliers do use antibiotics, etc. unless specifically specified on the package label. The gentleman I spoke with didn't know much other than what he could find in his employee notes but recommended I ask the butcher on site. It would be great if the person who bought the lamb would let me know if the label said it was grass fed in Australia or if she found the information out another way.
