Mercury Chelation Following Amalgam Removal

QUESTION:

Hi. I have MCS and have it for three years now. I found a mercury-free dentist who is recommending I have all my amalgams replaced with a bio-compatible material. His protocol is in line with what others have posted about in a question about amalgam removal earlier in this blog. Whichever way I approach my two sore teeth and 4-5 amalgam fillings, it is very likely that in order to save teeth older, possibly corroded fillings (one, possibly two) will need to be drilled out.

It is my understanding that following the removal procedure I will want to take substances such as cilantro tincture or chlorella or both to assist in getting the mercury, which apparently gets stirred up during the removal process, to exit the body. Vitamin C and a good-multi vitamin was recommended on this blog, again earlier, but there was no mention of chelation.

Does anyone have information about mercury chelation they would like to share?

xtrema steamer

QUESTION:

Debra,
I know you highly recommend the extrema cookware but I've never heard you mention their steamer which is made of silicone. I want to buy a steamer and I'm wondering if a silicone steamer would be safe to cook in or if I would be wiser to stick with bamboo or stainless steel.
Thank you,
Sara

POSTED BY SARA :: SOUTH CAROLINA USA :: 1:32 PM

DEBRA'S ANSWER:

We've had a lot of discussion on this blog about all three of those materials: bamboo, stainless steel, and silicone. Personally, I think any of the three would be fine, but not all my readers agree with me.

Sterile lubricating jelly alternatives

QUESTION:

HI-

I am planning a home birth in January and one of the items in my birthing kit is sterile lubricating jelly. The problem is all the MEDICAL sterile jellys I find all have parabens and are most likely petroleum based.

Any one have any suggestions maybe midwives or medical experts out there know safer alternatives? Midwife says it needs to be sterile.

I\'ve been staying away from all chemicals and would hate to have to use these during the birth.

thanks in advance for your suggestions.

nickel allergy

QUESTION:

hello .. i've recently been diagnosed with a strange nickel allegy - it doesn't affect my skin , but causes my lips to react with red bumps. i've been advised to eat a nickel-free diet (which includes no lettuce, no chocolate, no shellfish... an extremely long list of things you'd never expect). Right now I'm using a vanilla-flavored lip chap which doesn't include nickel as an ingredient, but was wondering if there were any lip chaps out there that would definitly be nickel-free.
Thanks!!

vinegar

QUESTION:

I read that some vinegars are processed with petrochemicals. Do you know if that is true? How would one find out if a certain brand is processed with petrochemicals or not?

Thank you for your help and your wonderful website.

POSTED BY DEBBIE :: NEW MEXICO USA :: 4:33 PM

DEBRA'S ANSWER:

It's not that vinegar is processed from petrochemicals, it is made from petrochemicals. Heinz is one brand that is made from plants. Look on the label. If it doesn't list a real food source, then it's made from petrochemicals.

how to remove smell from used fax & printer

QUESTION:

A friend recently was kind enough to give me a used fax machine and a used printer. However, he wears A LOT of cologne, and both of the machines reek of it. We have let them air out on our patio table outside for almost a week, but there is no change. Is there anything I can do to get rid of the perfume smell?

I am very chemically sensitive, and can not bring these items in with this odor, even thought I really appreciate somebody giving them to me.

Graphite from pencil embedded in the skin

QUESTION:

Dear Debra,

I have a question about graphite from a pencil embedded in the skin near a vein.

As a teen, I had a pencil puncture my skin in school, and a piece of graphite has been embedded ever since, for over a decade.

Over time, the graphite piece has gotten smaller and smaller. I did speak with a doctor about it at one point who told me that it was likely surrounded by scar tissue and not causing any problems.

However, recently, I've begun to feel pains and aches in just that area where the graphite is located.

Also, I have had slow, but consistent hair loss on my head for the last decade. It started about a year after the pencil wound, and has been consistent since then. I am female and have lost a great deal of my hair and my hair that grows back is thinner in diameter than it used to be.

Thank you very much for any information or recommendations.

POSTED BY ALYSSA :: CALIFORNIA USA :: 10:42 AM

DEBRA'S ANSWER:

Graphite in pencils, as we are usually exposed to it, is not toxic.

However, the MSDS for graphite says:
* The substance is toxic to upper respiratory tract.
* The substance may be toxic to cardiovascular system.
* Repeated or prolonged exposure to the substance can produce target organs damage.

I'm assuming that graphite residing in the body might be like mercury in dental fillings. You say it's getting smaller, so it probably is releasing small amounts of graphite into your body.

I personally would probably remove it.

Looking for a 100% Organic Cotton Waterproof Mattress Pad

QUESTION:

Hi,

I am looking for a 100% Organic Cotton Waterproof Mattress Pad.

We have been looking and so far we have only found one. It's called Organic Mattress Protector Pad (Waterproof & Non-Waterproof) by Naturepedic for $139.

I also just found this one on the internet through Debra's listings. And it is 100% Organic Cotton Mattress Pad by The Natural Sleep Store. It says the pads are "expertly machine quilted and will protect mattress from spills and accidents." And this is $185.

Would any one of these be healthy for a person suffering with MCS? I need this for a queen size bed. We were hoping to find cheaper.

Would you know of any that do not contain any synthetic materials? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much.

POSTED BY ANNETTE TWEEDEL :: LOUISIANA USA :: 3:34 PM

DEBRA'S ANSWER:

There are several different types of moisture protection for mattresses.

The Naturepedic waterproof mattress pad is waterproof. It contains a layer of food grade polyethylene that does not outgas. I have personally "sniffed" this polyethylene and there is no odor. It is certified by GREENGUARD. This is waterproof. It completely protects the mattress from liquids and is washable, so it is hygenic.

The Natural Sleep mattress pad that you mentioned might be moisture resistant, but I don't see from the description that it is waterproof. The fibers may be so tightly woven that it is difficult for water to penetrate. It wouldn't block moisture as well as the Naturepedic pad, but it is made from all natural materials.

There are also wool pads that are moisture resistant, again all natural, but not as waterproof as Naturepedic.

You really need to decide if you want a pad that is less effective and all natural or more effective and less natural. I think it depends on your needs. If you really need something to be waterproof, using a less effective pad will only result in an unclean mattress. But if you just need some moisture resistance for occasional spills, the natural fibers should be fine.

As long as we're talking about polyethylene, I want to clear up a confusion I've observed.

Polyethylene is made via different methods, resulting in material of different densities. You may have seen some of these abbreviations:

PE - polyethylene
HDPE - High density polyethylene
PEX - Cross-linked polyethylene
LDPE - Low density polyethylene

The PE is polyethylene. According to The Green Guide, both HDPE and LDPE have been found to not leach carcinogens or endocrine disrupting chemicals.

PET is polyethylene terephthalate, something else altogether. It has the recycling symbol #1. It contains additional polymers and has been found to leach antimony into foods and beverages that come in contact with it.

leaching plastic and metal

QUESTION:

Does the plastic or metal leach when hot, cold, fridge cold, or freezer cold or just room temperature. Under which temperature condition is the leaching greatest? I ask this in regard to tea, lemonade(acid)and just drinking water from my clear hard plastic drinking cups. Also it takes time and money to replace these utensils and I would like to do this in time-affordable way that is safe. I hope you understand my question.

POSTED BY IRD :: CALIFORNIA USA :: 3:42 AM

DEBRA'S ANSWER:

I love it when questions and responses both come in within days of each other.

Right before I received this question, another reader sent me this article about leaching, from Chemical & Engineering News: pubs.acs.org/cen/coverstory/87/8735cover.html.

The article says:

Plastic, rubber, cardboard, metal, and glass packaging act as a barrier against all sorts of contamination, but they are also a source of contamination...

It is not a question of whether packaging components will leach into a product, it’s a question of how much.

“If you have a material in contact with food, and if it’s not completely inert—and there are no completely inert materials—something in the packaging will end up in the food,” says Dimitrios Spyropoulos, a regulator at European Food Safety Authority.

The same holds true for pharmaceuticals. “You will always have leachables,” says Guirag Poochikian, a retired U.S. Food & Drug Administration regulator who used to evaluate leachables from inhaler devices. “The question is ‘What are they, and what is their safety margin’ ” in humans?

It's an interesting article that gives many examples of the leaching of different materials, but for me, the key idea in the whole article is "What are the substances that are leaching, and what is their potential harm in humans?"

The article mentions leaching from glass, which many of us consider to be so inert. But I looked it up and glass does leach.

At www.getgorilla.com/text/GLASS_COLORANTS.pdf there is an article which says:

Generally speaking glass is a relatively inert material, but it would be untrue to deny that leaching occurs. In fact leaching is an ordinary event and can be identified as a discoloration or dullness on the surface of the glass.

The Schott Guide to Glass describes the leaching process:

“Leaching causes sodium and potassium ions to be dissolved from the glass structure. The concentration of hydrogen ions (pH value) is changed by the implantation of hydrogenous ions in the glass, water molecules infiltrate the glass while alkali ions go into the solution. A thin gel layer of low alkali and poor water content is formed, about 100 millionths of a millimeter thick. If that layer becomes thicker it becomes visible as dullness. Drinking glasses may show that appearance after several hundred cycles in the dish water.”

It is the sodium and potassium that leach out of the glass, in miniscule amounts and after multiple washing cycles over long periods of time...Acidic substances such as wine can also accelerate leaching.

I would add that certainly any toxic metals present in glass would leach, such as lead in lead crystal. But I am not concerned about miniscule amounts of sodium and potassium.

A lot more research needs to be done to determine what is leaching from various materials, in what quantities and it's potential harm to humans. The article states that leaching may come from a variety of sources in addition to the molecular makeup of the container--other chemicals may enter a container during manufacturing, sterilization, or shipping. Even chemicals and metals from printing ink can migrate through plastic and leach into food and beverages.

At home, we can do our best to not add even more contaminants to food by the containers we use to store and serve food. Glass continues to be the number one choice for both.

To answer your question specifically, plastic leaches most when it is hot and least when it is cold. Also, the length of contact time makes a difference. If you are putting cold water in a plastic cup and you drink it immediately, there wouldn't be much leaching. If you put hot soup in a plastic container and let it sit until it is cooled, there would be a lot of leaching. I'm thinking of the hot soup I used to get from a Chinese restaurant in a plastic container--a lot of leaching. I don't know how heat affects the leaching of metals.

This is a good question and I need to do more research. Readers, please feel free to help out with this research and send in whatever you find about leaching.

Orthostatic Postural Tachycardia Syndrome remedies?

QUESTION:

What are some good remedies can help alleviate Orthostatic Postural Tachycardia Syndrome even if temporarily so I can accomplish basic tasks? I can barely get out of bed to do anything anymore because I can't stand up straight and I'm too dizzy to.

Does anyone have any tips? I have successfully used remedies for eliminating or controlling many severe symptoms but I'm at a loss here. I'm desperate as I often find myself without food because I can't go grocery shopping. Last time I was very dizzy from several days lack of food.

Doctors have been notoriously unhelpful or harmful. What kind of doctor should an MCS patient see? Particularly for treating this particular syndrome, please. I'm at the end of my rope. Thanks.

How safe are aluminum fry pans coated with the green eco friendly coating?

QUESTION:

Hi Debra,
I am looking for Green fry pans that are "safe". I understand how dangerous Teflon coating is & am hoping to find something good that is made with the safe coating. I understand you use the Cuisinart Green ware fry pan. My concern is that it is made of aluminum. I understand that it is coated on the inside.... I'm just wondering if the aluminum can seep through the coating and get into food when cooked? Of course, my reasoning for this is to prevent any aluminum from entering our bodies which is supposed to cause Alzheimer's Disease. I suffer from some other illnesses along with terrible constant pain all over my body...We are going more organic & using a homeopath to help us. We're in our late 50's.

Thank you for your help!
Ruthie

POSTED BY RUTHIE :: MICHIGAN USA :: 12:13 PM

DEBRA'S ANSWER:

The coating is a continuous ceramic coating. To the best of my knowledge, it completely seals the aluminum, and the aluminum does not get through to the food.

Human bodies certainly transmit energy, as do human thoughts and feelings. They are energy wavelengths just as electromagnetic fields are energy wavelengths.

Plastic medicine holders

QUESTION:

Hi Debra,

I have MCS and I am looking for a medicine holder because I take a lot of natural supplements, at least 9 different ones. The ones in the stores are plastic, are they safe to use? Although, they are not quite what I am looking for. Those have a spot for each day of the week. I wish they had some that just had slots to hold supplements without having the day of the week on them and each separately so that way I knew which one I was taking first, second and so on.

I wish they had something like that out there somewhere. Do they? I hope I am making sense. So anyway, are those plastic ones safe? Are is there something out there that is safer?

I need this for when we go somewhere's for a meal.

Thanks for the help.

POSTED BY ANNETTE TWEEDEL :: LOUISIANA USA :: 1:14 PM

DEBRA'S ANSWER:

I don't know what type of plastic is used to make those holders, but they appear to me to not be harmful. If you can find out the type of plastic from a manufacturer, I can tell you the toxicity.

Personally, I use little glass butter holders with lids, which work well at home, but don't travel.

Readers, what do you use to sort and carry vitamins?

Replace amalgam, possibly with gold

QUESTION:

I am considering replacing my amalgams and I am looking for a filling material that is safe for someone with MCS. I have looked at past posts and having done the usual dental biocompatibility tests. I agree that they are not accurate enough, although possibly good as a starting point. From what I have read, the process of placing a sample of the possible dental material in the mouth for an extended period of time is probably the best method of testing biocompatibility. The material I am leaning towards is "high noble gold"- high content of gold with only one other metal, platinum most likely, because of sensitivities to plastics. Any experiences with this? Any success stories and the materials used would be appreciated.

Link between MCS and Disordered Eating

QUESTION:

Dear Debra,

First, I want to say thank you for all your fantastic work and effort in sharing all the information you've gathered. It is so needed!

I have MCS among other health conditions (which of course are all interrelated... candidiasis, EMF sensitivity, SAD, depression, etc.), and I am recovering from a long year filled with episodes of binge eating. I read in the autobiography section of your website that before you realized you were chemically sensitive, you also suffered from some of these other conditions, including binge eating. Can you tell me a bit more about how MCS and binge eating are related? I know that my low seratonin levels contribute to SAD, depression, and binge eating, etc., but I'm curious to learn more about the link between the MCS and bingeing.

Thank you for any information you have on this.
All best wishes!

An Anonymous Friend

POSTED BY ANONYMOUS :: MINNESOTA USA :: 10:28 AM

DEBRA'S ANSWER:

My observation was that when I was exposed to a toxic chemical, that exposure would create an uncontrollable urge to eat.

I don't know the exact mechanism in the body for this, but it was always an urge to eat sweets and other carbohydrates.

I also know from experience that chocolate will stop a chemical reaction. I've seen that in my own body and with many others.

So I suspect that this urge to eat was my body's way of trying to counterbalance the chemicals it was being exposed to.

As I reduced my chemical exposures, this binge eating went away and I was able to then choose the healthy foods I wanted to eat.

Pre-natal vitamins

QUESTION:

Could someone please comment on a safe pre-natal vitamin. Many of the food based organic vitamins have lead. The manufacturers claim the amount of lead is safe. This is very unsettleing to me. I have been taking New Chapter and Thorne. I would love to hear others opinions on the lead debate and your recommendations on a good pre-natal.

Thank you for your time!
Danielle

POSTED BY DANIELLE :: MICHIGAN USA :: 4:19 AM

DEBRA'S ANSWER:

I'm not sure where you got the idea that organic whole food vitamins contain lead.

I found a study done a few years ago by the Food & Drug Administration that showed elevated levels of lead in some vitamins. There is a chart at USFDA: Survey Data on Lead in Women's and Children's Vitamins which clearly shows a wide range of lead in various brands of vitamins. You can clearly see which brands have the least and choose those. They also evaluate how much lead is too much.

I personally take Standard Process organic whole food vitamins and they are not on the list at all.

It has been determined that there is no safe level for lead. That said, however, there is a general background ambient level of lead in the environment today.

My opinion is that the benefits of vitality and nutrition from organic whole food supplements outweigh whatever trace amounts of lead may be present.

Homeopathic remedies for MCS

QUESTION:

Debra,

Your bio said you were once chemically sensitive and now have recovered.

I was wondering if you know anything about homeopathic desensitization treatments. There is a homeopathic doctor I've researched who says she treated people for formaldehyde sensitivity (those who are sensitive to really low levels that don't affect others at all). She said that such a treatment has made her patients lives much simpler.

The whole idea seems counter-intuitive to me, but wanted to see if you or your readers have any insight on this.

Thank you,
Sara

POSTED BY SARA :: CALIFORNIA USA :: 10:03 AM

DEBRA'S ANSWER:

I have no experience using homeopathic remedies for MCS, however, I am very familiar with a similar process in which specific doses of the chemicals are given to "neutralize" the effects of the chemicals one is being exposed to.

The problem with this from my viewpoint is that, yes, you may be able to take a remedy so you don't react to a toxic chemical, but a toxic chemical is TOXIC, it is still making your body sick if you are exposed to it, MCS or not.

This is why I am in favor of removing the source of the chemical wherever possible as the first step, rather than doing something to be able to tolerate the exposure. Symptoms are a sign that there is something wrong that needs to be fixed, not made tolerable with a drug or remedy.

Water filters...Water Kleen FRS

QUESTION:

Debra, Have you or any one heard of the Water Kleen FRS water filter on Danielchapterone.com? It says it removes floride and has acatalytic carbon plus nasa silver. Can you check this out it looks a reasonable price counter top filter. Thanks Debra from Tenn

POSTED BY DEBORAH BARNETT :: TENNESSEE USA :: 9:58 AM

DEBRA'S ANSWER:

I looked at the website for this and it doesn't give much information.

It says that it removes 81% of fluoride and that's the only claim it makes.

It says it contains a "priority blend" Kalcifate™ Plus (but doesn't say what it is) and EPA registered NASA developed silver impregnated charcoal media with catalytic carbon.

I don't recommend silver impregnated charcoal for water filters. It is added to reduce bacteria, but isn't really needed, and the silver will leach into your water. High silver levels in the body can cause health problems.

I think it would remove chloramines because it contains catalytic carbon. But it doesn't say that it removes anything beyond fluoride.

From my research I know that fluoride is very difficult to remove.

Dove Sensitive skin body wash is harmful to those with soy allergies

QUESTION:

Dear Readers,

I have been diagnosed with allergies to soy products for over 20 years. I have been teased by my husband forever because it takes me so long to grocery shop. Why? Because i need to scrutinize every label of manufactured foods for soy products. Recently I used Dove beauty body wash for SENSATIVE SKIN. within two days i developed a severe reaction I and my doctors originally thought was a bacterial infection. After four days of tourture/pain, sits baths, antibiotics and ointments i had to go to an emergency room to be cathatarized just to pee. At that visit the doctor recommended i use soap for sensative skin to wash until the allergic reaction abated. I went home and just before bathing thought... make sure this soap is really ok to use. Imagine my horror when i looked at the ingredient list (not warning label mind you) and found that the 2nd ingredient for this "soap" was Soybean oil. What I had been experiencing for the past four days was not an infection but an alergic reation bordering on SEVERE!!! to this soap. I had to get an injection of steroids and start anaphalaxic treatment. I have had to use speciliazed creams on my vaginal area as the soap has matabolized into the mucus membranes of my vaginal wall. I had to suffer through a period laced with the iritant absorbed and now must also consult a dermatologist as the irritant/allergent is coming out of my skin. my skin is cracked and sore, I itch all over and have to take an antihistamine and it may take months before this alergen leaves my system.

For your own safety, check everything you might use in your household for your alergens! I never would have thought to look for a food alergen in my soap.

helium balloons

QUESTION:

Hi Debra,

Is there a health concern related to helium baloons? Is helium safe to be around/breath in when a helium baloon pops?

Thanks!

POSTED BY AMY L :: ARIZONA USA :: 2:55 PM

DEBRA'S ANSWER:

There's a page about helium at http://www.lenntech.com/periodic-chart-elements/he-en.htm which says the following:

Helium is the second most abundant element in the known universe...Neutral helium at standard conditions is non-toxic, plays no biological role and is found in trace amounts in human blood.

Effects of exposure: The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation. Inhalation: High voice. Dizziness. Dullness. Headache. Suffocation. Skin: on contact with liquid: frostbite. Eyes: on contact with liquid: frostbite. Inhalation risk: On loss of containment this gas can cause suffocation by lowering the oxygen content of the air in confined areas. Check oxygen content before entering area.

The amount of helium that you would be exposed to from a balloon popping would be insignificant.

exercise balls - rubber versus vinyl?

QUESTION:

Hi Debra,

I have been trying to rid my life of PVC, but I was considering purchasing an exercise ball (to use as a chair while at my desk as well as a workout tool) and am not happy with my list of options. Many of the balls happily advertise themselves as "latex free" but are made of PVC vinyl. One site even said that because the ball was latex-free it's OK for your child to lick them! Meanwhile, the rubber ones are not natural rubber so I'm sure they're not sustainably produced either, and while I've never found myself to have any latex reactions, I'm not sure that bringing such a allergenic material into my house is a good idea either. Should I just give up on the idea entirely? Or would limited use of a PVC ball (if I could find a used one to purchase maybe, to make it "sustainable") not be such a bad idea? I do love the feel of sitting on exercise balls, and I'm very disappointed to see how few truly eco-friendly options are available.

POSTED BY ONNIE :: ILLINOIS USA :: 2:10 PM

DEBRA'S ANSWER:

I like the feel of sitting on an exercise ball too, but I've given up on the idea of having one, for all the reasons you've listed above.

Of all the options you've given, I would pick buying a used one. At least it will have outgassed some and you will be giving it a second life before it sits in a landfill.

halitosis elimination (bad breath)

QUESTION:

is there any safe non toxic solution to eliminate bad breath? what should i be aware of?

thanks

POSTED BY JOHN :: SOUTH CAROLINA USA :: 2:31 PM

DEBRA'S ANSWER:

There are a couple of suggestions about bad breath at Q&A: Tooth Soap, but we might as well discuss it here as its own subject.

Bad breath, like other unpleasant body symptoms, is an indicator of some kind of imbalance in the body that needs to be addressed. It could be a need to improve dental hygiene, a need to improve digestion, or other imbalances. It's important to find the cause and correct the problem, not just use a mouthwash or mints to freshen breath. A healthy body has little odor.

Standard mouthwashes contain alcohol and may contain formaldehyde, artificial colors, ammonia, and hydrogen peroxide.

I'd start with making sure you have good oral hygiene, including flossing and brushing, and if that doesn't take care of it, visit your dentist to see if you have any infections or any other problems in your mouth. If that doesn't take care of it, visit a natural oriented health practitioner to help identify the problem and get a solution.

Pneumonia

QUESTION:

Hi Debra,
My 2 yr old niece has pneumonia. She and her brother actually get sick about every 2-3 months. What are some natural health ways to prevent sickness besides taking probiotics. I know my sister cleans with safe cleaners. Any helpful tips on treating pneumonia too?
Thanks!

POSTED BY APRIL :: TEXAS USA :: 10:57 AM

DEBRA'S ANSWER:

Pneumonia is one of those illnesses that requires having a strong immune system to recover from. There are many toxic chemicals classified as "immunotoxicants" (see the link to the list on my Toxic Chemicals Contribute to Catching Colds and Flu page). Most of the toxic chemicals discussed in my book Home Safe Home harm the immune system, and you can find out how to eliminate them from your home in this book. Children do not yet have developed immune systems so it is even more difficult for them to fight pneumonia.

Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs, so it is particularly important to eliminate the toxic chemicals that are air pollutants, as these irritate the lungs and make it harder to breathe.

There is a good article about how to take a natural approach to healing pneumonia at Pneumonia--How To Help Heal It Without Drugs, Surgery Nor Treatments. Suggested are fasting, breathing fresh air, and other simple steps that support the body's own ability to heal.

I would suggest that you get a good natural-oriented doctor to help with an supervise treatment. Pneumonia is a serious illness and can be fatal. Not a time to experiment.

Sinus, Allergies and congestion (Head/Chest cold or allergies)

QUESTION:

Hi Debra,
Do you know of anything "safe" to give children for sinus, coughing, snotty noses, sore throat, ear infections, etc? I don't know if my son has allergies or a cold right now but he's super snotty and I don't want it to turn into an ear infection. I know that breastmilk in the sinus cavities has been known to heal infections (thankfully, I am lactating right now) but I am looking for additional info on treating head/chest colds/allergies in both adults and children. I also thought this would be a good topic to start up with winter just around the corner.

POSTED BY APRIL :: TEXAS USA :: 8:27 AM

DEBRA'S ANSWER:

I'm going to ask mothers reading this to answer, since I don't have children myself.

I do know that this symptom is often related to food allergies, could be something in the air, could be a cold. My husband, for example, gets nasal congestion when he eats wheat.

My best advice is to try to track down what is causing it so you can take the right steps to correct it. A cold remedy is not going to solve a food allergy.

Advice for calming itchy skin

QUESTION:

Hi..

I'm chemically sensitive and periodically suffer with excema and itchy skin.. usually on my face, scalp, eyes, ears, thighs and hips.. I also sometimes lose my hair when it gets really bad, so it's a pretty distressing symptom for me.

I'm very careful about chemicals I use on my skin and eat carefully but don't seem to be able to manage this symptom except with topical cortisone, and even that often isn't enough.

Does anyone have any advice about things that have worked for them??

I'm about to reluctantly try cortisone injections because am so tired of feeling this way, but I wanted to exhaust any less radical solutions first.

Many thanks,
Katherine

The first question I would ask is, are you showering or bathing in chlorinated water? This often causes skin conditions. My first suggestion would be to get a shower filter if you don't already have one and give it a couple of weeks. This will probably clear it up entirely.

Healthiest Root Canal / Crown Choices

QUESTION:

Hi Debra,

I have browsed your site for great information for about a year now. Thank you for all you do. As a 25 year old who started developing MCS symptoms a couple of years ago, it has been invaluable.

My question concerns dentistry. I believe I am going to need a root canal and a crown very soon, and because of the MCS, I have to look at the materials more closely than most. Especially where it's preferment.

First, I am wondering about the safety of the "gutta percha" material that they put into the tooth, where the pulp used to be? Is it toxic at all?

Secondly, which type of crown is best? It looks like there are 4 types: Porcelain covering gold (which I guess is durable but can wear the other teeth over time), porcelain covering non-precious metal (which can apparently cause nickel allergy), all-porcelain (not as durable and more expensive than the rest), and all gold.

I don't know which to choose to keep me the healthiest as I continue to live with MCS into my later years.

Thank you for your help!

Toxic Nitrile Gloves

QUESTION:

Dear Debra,

Getting health care has become a huge problem for me because medical facilities almost universally use Nitrile gloves (to prevent allergic reactions to latex).

I am unable to be inside any building where they are being used. Either touching or breathing will cause a severe reaction. I'm worried about escalation to anaphylactic shock.

On the Internet I've found that some others, especially health care workers, are sensitized, too.

__________________________________________

www.forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=271230

__________________________________________

My symptoms are always the same, mostly neuromuscular pain (from head to toe). The worst symptoms appear 12 to 13 hours after exposure. It\'s the same reaction I have when exposed to ethylene glycol (antifreeze). It's as if I have no enzymes available to detoxify this chemical.

I found a clue on the Internet:

__________________________________________

www.wipo.int/pctdb/en/wo.jsp?WO=2006%2F058104&IA=WO2006%2F058104&DISPLAY=DESC

"Today, natural and synthetic rubber are widely used for various products such as clothing, gloves, eraser, tubing, etc. Depending on the application, the rubber product may be used in cold temperature or harsh weather. Thus, in some cases, a freeze protectant chemical is added to the rubber composition to ensure that the performance of the rubber product will not be compromised by environmental factors.

A popular freeze protectant chemical that is incorporated into rubber compositions is ethylene glycol. While there are other chemicals that would impart weather resistance to the rubber composition if mixed with rubber, ethylene glycol is preferred because of its compatibility with latex rubber. Ethylene glycol can be blended with rubber to generate a relatively smooth and usable freeze protected rubber composition. This compatibility with rubber distinguishes ethylene glycol from other freeze protective chemicals such as propylene glycol which, when blended with natural latex, triggers a process that results in coagulation and clumping. Thus, the mixture of propylene glycol and latex rubber does not lend itself to being used in products..."

I can tolerate vinyl gloves. I always ask that latex gloves be removed from the room but so far I don't seem to react.

I know it's all individual but are other MCS people plagued with this seemingly unsolvable situation? (Whatever happened to , "Do no harm?")

MCS and Diabetes

QUESTION:

After many years of MCS, I discovered a new twist that everyone with Chemical Sensitivities should look into. The Endocrinologist discovered that I had Insulin Resistance (some would say Pre-Diabetes or early diabetes.)

In any case after treating this with a medicine, I felt it was not being good to my body....researched, sure enough while blocking sugar from my blood and getting it into my cells (a good thing), it also blocks other nutrients. So I looked for herbal substitutes...which I found and they do the same thing without the side effects.

I take GluControl from VRP (Vitamin Research Products) (vrp.com) and BLOOD SUGAR from Nature's Way. The reason for the two combos is that they have different herbs and one has Chromium and the other has Vanadium....both specifics for Diabetes, Pre Diabetes, Insulin Resistance (really all the same things in different degrees.) I also throw in some Fenugreek and Gymnema caps by Nature's Way when I feel like it or need a little extra boost (either my meter reads a little high, I feel a little funny....like a headache coming on, etc.)

The suprise was that my nasal passages didn't swell on this regieme and my sinus problems were improved....Which solved my terrible headache problems.......And i am not nearly as chemically sensitive....

i keep wondering how many people might get relief from chemical aensitivities and allergies if they have the problem i had and get it solved....I think the chemical odors i breathed in were accumulating in my nasal passages and being absorbed into my blood stream. I have no proof that this theory is correct....All i know is, since treating my insulin resistance/diabetes with a couple of herbal preparations, no more headaches or chemical sensitivities.

in all fairness, i do ocassionally get a headache, but i take a few more of the herbals instead of headache medicine and the headache goes away.

POSTED BY JULIE :: INDIANA USA :: 3:14 PM

DEBRA'S ANSWER:

This is very interesting to me that you see a connection, because even after years of contoling my own MCS through avoiding the chemicals that cause it, I also had higher than normal blood sugar. I'm wondering how widespread this connection is.

Natural Acne Treatment?

QUESTION:

My daughter recently returned from Iraq with blemishes on her once beautiful, flawless skin. I made her some exfoliant with baking soda and sea salt but it didn't help. She said most of the women who return from the middle east end up with acne.

PROACTIV is heavily marketed but I researched all of the ingredients and was shocked. It seems most of the treatments ALL have parabens and other toxic ingredients.

A website Acne Skin Guide.com recommended PROACTIV, which leads me to believe they are 'connected' to Proactiv. Apparently, this toxic mix is highly effective. To me, it just isn't worth the risk.

What is an effective but SAFE product or remedy?

POSTED BY TERRY :: FLORIDA USA :: 1:13 PM

DEBRA'S ANSWER:

I haven't researched natural products for acne, but I'm sure that my readers will respond to this.

I do know from my own personal experience that acne can be caused by a variety of factors. I had horrible acne as a teenager, but now I have flawless skin.

Acne can actually be caused by a buildup of toxic chemicals in the skin. The fact that your daughter's skin began to break out in Iraq and she says other women have the same problem leads me to believe there is some environmental factor.

So a cleansing diet with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables and pure water would help more than a topical product.

The topical treatment that helped me the most was applying a clay mask, as the clay pulls toxins out of your skin. You can get clay masks at any natural food store. Just get the plain clay, mix it with water, and apply. Leave it on til it dries and wash it off with warm water. Another good mask is oatmeal. Just just regular oatmeal, and apply with the same instructions. If it's too think, put the oatmeal in the blender and whiz it to make a powder before mixing with water.

There's a website at www.bestacnereview.com/ that compares quite a few acne products. Proactiv is down at the bottom of the list, but there are many natural products you can explore, including a book on natural acne treatments.

Plastic-Free Band Aids

QUESTION:

Are there any band aids left that have NO plastic stuck to the gauze part? Adding the plastic originated with the idea that it would not stick to a wound. HOWEVER, as we all know, plastic is a horrible substance in itself (bisphenol A, petroleum-based, etc.) and it's the last thing I would want on my skin, let alone a wound!

POSTED BY ROBYN CORNWELL :: CONNECTICUT USA :: 10:42 PM

DEBRA'S ANSWER:

Well, you could get cloth band-aids, which are a lot more comfortable, flexible, and breathe easier. I learned about these from my massage therapist, who had a cut finger one day and gave me a whole massage with one on his finger. I didn't feel it at all.

If you wanted to dispense with the commercial band-aid altogether, you could just wrap plain cotton gauze around the wound, which you can buy in a roll at any drug store. Or, to be even simpler, you could just rip a strip of fabric from an old rag and use that to wrap around the wound. You could just tie the ends together on these or wrap a piece of tape around them (which wouldn't touch your skin).

If you want to take the natural route, you can use comfrey leaves as band-aids. Or, here's a "natural" band-aid made from "paper bark with anesthetics in it, and held on by a piece of very strong spider web!" . :-)

I found an "eco" band-aid that I do NOT recommend: Eco-Guard Vegan "Band-Aids". As much as I respect the idea of being vegan, I don't agree with the general idea that it's OK to substitute toxic plastics for animal materials. These cruelty-free bandages are made from recycled PVC plastic (it's still toxic, even if it is recycled), dyed with natural food-grade colorings, and have an animal-free, water-based adhesive.

Dangers of Grapefruit Seed Extract

QUESTION:

My husband and I have been taking 15 drops of grapefruit seed extract diluted in juice or water for several years now as an immune system booster. In fact, when we've been ill, the amount we've ingested has been much higher.

Now, in my research to find non-toxic cosmetics, I found a study that grapefruit seed extract contains toxic chemicals, including benzothonium chloride and parabens. I've also read studies that it is not safe to ingest grapefruit seed extract. But, I've found no information on the adverse side effects/disease that may be caused by such ingestion. Do you have any information on the bodily harm we may have done by such frequent use of grapefruit seed extract, or natural remedies we can use to detoxify our systems and remove any harmful, residual chemicals?

Thank you!

POSTED BY MICHELLE :: CONNECTICUT USA :: 12:44 PM

DEBRA'S ANSWER:

The two chemicals you mention are both common preservatives, and are not extremely toxic, relatively speaking. I'm much less concerned about your ingesting these than pesticides, for example.

I haven't done a lot of research on grapefruit seed extract, or used it myself. Grapefruit seed extract is derived from the seeds, pulp, and white membranes of grapefruit. Some natural products use it as a preservative. Recently, studies have identified synthetic preservatives in some commercial grapefruit seed extracts. Laboratory tests found the natural extracts that did not contain the synthetic preservatives to had little or no natural antimicrobial attributes of their own.

The confusing part of this is we don't know if companies using grapefruit seed extract as an ingredient in another product are using grapefruit seed extract with or without preservatives, or if the companies using this as an ingredient even knew the chemicals were in the grapefruit seed extract.

If you are using grapefruit seed extract, or a product that contains it as an ingredient, I think it's worth checking with the company on this.

MCS Recovery or Significant Improvement Stories

QUESTION:

I am always searching on the internet for stories relating to people fully recovering from MCS. To date I have found few of these testimonials. And, it seems that those that I have come across specifically relate to someone getting a Candida issue under control which resulted in a dramatic improvement in their chemical sensitivities. It would be great to hear that some folks out there have conquered this condition to the point where they have gained a decent quality of life back. By this I mean getting to the point where someone has the freedom to travel, go to stores, restaurants etc...w/o any or severe reactions and the concern of the exposures.

Need recommendations on how to remove mold in crawl space

QUESTION:

We are contemplating purhcasing a 7 yr old home but an inspector, using air samples, found a high mold count (7000) for Cladisporium. The crawlspace has block walls and a concrete floor and is dry and clean. A thorough visual inspection found a small area that had a light colored substance on the floor joists. How do we remove this? My wife is very sensitive to many chemicals and cannot tolerate bleach, either. Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

POSTED BY TAYLOR :: MICHIGAN USA :: 1:37 PM

DEBRA'S ANSWER:

We had the mold in our crawlspace professionally removed (see Bau-Biologie: Mold Inspection and Remediation), but if you have only a small area, I would recommend using heat. Mold cannot live above a certain temperature or in dry conditions, and heat changes both.

You might want to have a professional take a look at it and see what they suggest, as you really want to handle this completely so you don't have a bigger mold problem in the future.

Readers, any other suggestions?

Walking Sticks

While looking for something else on the internet, I came across a website about walking sticks.

What caught my eye was the reason for walking sticks (also called "staffs"):

Staffs allow a typical hiker to reduce the "foot-felt" body weight by as much as 20%. Since the hiker is leaning on the staff rather than his foot with each step he takes, the feet have less work to do. Try standing on a scale and leaning on a staff. When you lean over on the staff (that is on the ground), your body weight goes down. Switching from left to right hand with the staff balances this weight savings while evenly distributing the aerobic benefits of the upper-body exercise. You win big both ways.
Other uses for walking sticks in the wild are: to clear spiderwebs, to part thick bushes or grass, as a support when going uphill or a brake when going downhill, as a balance point when crossing rough terrain, to test mud and puddles for depth, and as a defense against wild animals. Hmmmm...defense against wild animals. Could be defense against attackers in a city (just read that originally, one of the reasons travelers on foot carried walking sticks was to protect themselves from thieves--indeed you can read all about using a walking stick for self-defense at http://ejmas.com/jnc/jncart_barton-wright_0200.htm).

In times past, when walking was a major mode of transportation, walking sticks were common; now not so much so. But there are times when I do a lot of walking around town, and my feet do start to hurt. Maybe a walking stick would make it more comfortable to walk long distances.

This webpage has tips about choosing walking sticks and even instructions on how to make your own: http://walking.about.com/cs/poles/a/walkingsticks.htm.

Here's another informational site with a lot of good information: http://www.backpacking.net/walkstik.html

Some pros and cons of using a walking stick:
http://www.personal.dundee.ac.uk/~pjclinch/poles.htm

Natural Eye Care

In our consumer-oriented industrial culture, the orientation we are given is to let things break down and then hire an expert or buy a product to fix it. Nature, on the other hand, continuously renews and maintains life forms. And so, following Nature's inspiration, I continuously am looking for ways that I can continueously renew and care for my body, rather than letting it get to the point where there is a problem, and then trying to solve it.

This kind of self-care maintenance includes things like brushing teeth, eating nutritious food, etc.

For some years I have been looking for this kind of self-care instructions regarding my eyes. Some things are obvious, like don't look at the sun, don't poke your eyes with sharp objects, and the like, but I haven't been able to find information on how to care for your eyes to keep them in good health and to maintain optimum vision.

I use my eyes every day for my work as a writer. It would be very difficult to do what I do if I couldn't see.

Over the past year or so, for the first time in my life I began to have styes on the edge of my right eyelid. Stys develop when a gland at the edge of the eyelid becomes infected. It is like a small pimple on the edge of the eyelid. When I looked up stye on the internet, all I could find was that they are caused by bacteria. Nothing about how to prevent them. Styes are not a big thing. They come and go in a few days, but they are uncomfortable and not very attractive.

At the beginning of July, I got what I thought was another stye, but it didn\'t go away. When after a few weeks it was still there, I went on another internet search and found there is another similar bump called a chalazion, which is an enlarged blockage of the same gland. This can last one to three months.

After two months, I finally went to an eye doctor to get a proper diagnosis and see what I could do to heal it or have it removed. And I got some information that surprised me.

Apparently styes and chalazions are quite common. They are caused by the build-up of oil and debris that gathers around the eyelashes. Our eyes are self-cleansing, but debris that is removed from the eye itself can gather around the eyelashes.

Now, around the rim of the eyelid there are meibomian glands, which are responsible for the supply of sebum, an oily substance that, among other things, prevents evaporation of the eye\'s tear film. There are approximately 50 meibomian glands on the upper eyelids and 25 glands on the lower eyelids. When these glands are malfunctioning, the result is not only styes and chalazions, but also dry eyes, a very common eye condition for which millions of dollars worth of eye drops are sold.

When I went to the eye doctor, first a technician tested my eyes before I saw the doctor. I asked her if there was any self-care maintenance I could do for my eyes and she said no. Then I asked the doctor the same question, and she said no. It wasn\'t until after the doctor examined my eyes and diagnosed the chalazion and I asked, "What causes chalazions and how can I prevent another one?" did she tell me about the meibomian glands and recommended washing my eyelashes as both a treatment and ongoing preventive measure. In fact, she told me that everyone should wash their eyelashes every day--at least once, if not twice--just as we brush our teeth! And, of course, she recommended an expensive product to use to wash them (I purchased it only because I wanted to heal the chalazion).

Now that I understand how the eye works, that these glands can get clogged, and how important it is to eye health that they function, it makes sense to me to take a minute to clean my eyelashes every day. But it makes me wonder, why is this not as widely known as brushing teeth? Especially since there are so many particles in the environment that come into the eye on a daily basis. Instead of maintaining eye health through simple self-care, we are taught nothing about our eyes and then sold myriad problems to relieve the symptoms that could have been prevented.

I have ordered some books on natural eye care and will be doing further research on this. I welcome any tips and comments or resources any of you have on how to care for our eyes naturally to maintain eye health and excellent vision.

Here are a few websites I found on the subject:

Rock salt lamps

QUESTION:

We are interested in purchasing a rock salt lamp. We have heard that they have many health benefits. What is your opinion of these lamps? Thank you.

POSTED BY KLP :: NORTH CAROLINA USA :: 5:16 PM

DEBRA'S ANSWER:

Those who sell these lamps say that when gently heated, glowing salt lamps emit natural negative ions, creating an effect similar to an ion generator (increasing the wattage of the bulb increases the emission of ions per square foot). When the lamp becomes warm, it absorbs moisture and the crystal becomes damp on the surface. This binds negative ions with the excess positive ions, neutralizing the positively-charged atmosphere of a room. This is physics. I believe this is true.

Negative ions are known to have positive effects on all body functions, including the immune system, circulatory system, and digestive system. In general, our bodies benefit overall from being in an indoor environment full of negative ions, as it is more similar to the outdoor environment.

They certainly have a lovely, warm glow, similar to candlelight.

I have a salt lamp and I find it to be extremely energizing--so much so that I can only have it on for short periods of time. I can't sleep with it on.

I would say that in my experience, salt lamps can create an effect on the human body. The effect they create is probably different for everyone.

dye-free medicines?

QUESTION:

We are looking for dye-free medicines for both adults and children. We would also prefer that they have no artificial sweetners or chemical preservatives. All we have been able to find so far are: dye-free Tylenol, dye-free Motrin and dye-free Benedryl. Do you know of any others or, better yet, a company that specializes in dye-free OTC medicines? Thank you so much for all of your valuable advice. I read your newsletters religiously.

Kelly

POSTED BY KLP :: NORTH CAROLINA USA :: 4:20 AM

DEBRA'S ANSWER:

Well, personally I wouldn't take these drugs with or without dyes. But if you are going to take them, it's better that they be dye-free. I have no idea where to get these dye-free drugs.

There are what special pharmacies that make up prescriptions without dyes, etc. I remember once a doctor gave me such a prescription and sent me to a local pharmacy that did that. But I don't remember what they are called. They are probably online somewhere.

My best recommendation to you is to find some natural remedies, such as herbs or homeopathics, to handle the symptoms you need to relieve with these drugs. Or, better yet, find out and handle their root cause and build health in your body.

Electric Range: Smooth-top vs. Coils

QUESTION:

Since we need a new range, which type would cause less EMF problems? Standard coil or smooth-top? Your thoughts would be valuable and appreciated.

POSTED BY LORI :: MICHIGAN USA :: 4:05 PM

DEBRA'S ANSWER:

Unfortunately, I don't think there is a list somewhere of the EMF emissions from various electric ranges. If I were shopping for an electric range, I'd take my gaussmeter with me and check each model I was considering. I think you would find the levels vary widely.

Personally, I use a gas range. I think it's a toss up between EMF exposures with electric ranges and combustion by-product exposures with the gas, and the combustion by-products are easier to mitigate with ventilation and range maintenance. Also, as an avid cook, I prefer the instant adjustability of gas, and I like the more natural flame, like cooking over a fire. Gas ranges have no EMFs that I am aware of.

I looked for an environmental comparison between using gas or electric for cooking, but couldn't find one. It would make a difference how your electricity was being generated.

For a gaussmeter, try LessEMF.com. Since EMFs are their specialty, they may be able to help you sort out this question.

How Long Does MDF Offgas?

QUESTION:

Can anyone tell me how long formaldehye offgasses from medium density fiberboard once the board is cut and assembled into, for example, an audio booth.

I have a constantly running -- and extremely quiet fan in the booth that brings in air from outside and exhausts to the outside. Will this booth be safe to spend three hours a day inside it?

POSTED BY KEN BOETTCHER :: CALIFORNIA USA :: 10:48 AM

DEBRA'S ANSWER:

Take a look at the Material Safety Data Sheet for Medium Density Fiberboard. It has a lot of information on the toxicity of formaldehyde, the amount of formaldehyde in this product and the necessity to control the outgassing and provide ventilation.

Contact the manufacturer with your outgassing question, as both temperature and humidity affect the rate of emissions.

Computers are allergic to me...

QUESTION:

i've had this problem for years - computers break when i use them. apple has replaced 2 laptops and 1 ipod for me because they couldn't repair my brand new machines, my imac's continually squirrely, and windows applications and programs often freeze or otherwise freak out when i am using them. someone else can step in right after me and have no problems at all. the worst part - i love the technology and all it entails.

this truly is not a complaint that's masking an inablilty to learn & problem-solve.

i first was suspicious of this problem when in a 'technology in education' masters degree program during which we all worked simultaneously on our own laptops & i was the only one who often couldn't maintain my data, link properly to the server, use certain aspects in a program, etc. these issues happened with my computer, its replacement, and those i borrowed.

anyway, i started having hurt feelings(!)and a bit of paranoia. have hesitated loading my replacement ipod for fear of messing it up....

is my personal electricity causing this? how do i adjust it?
i've tried visualizing a buffer surrounding me when sitting at the computer. no luck. someone recommended wearing purple ribbons on my wrists.

any advice out there?

POSTED BY LINDA :: COLORADO USA :: 4:08 PM

DEBRA'S ANSWER:

I have heard of this with other people and have experienced it myself.

One day things went wrong with all my electronics, so I just gave up and went shopping. I walked into a Radio Shack store and all their electronics started going haywire too!

Our bodies certainly have their own electromagnetic fields which can affect the electrical and magnetic fields around us just as the electrical and magnetic fields around us can affect our bodies. Fortuneately for me, this doesn't happen with me very often!

Not sure what to recommend to you. Readers?

Safe Mammogram for MCS individual?

QUESTION:

I suffer from MCS and also suspect I have troubles with EMF. I need to have a mammogram as part of a physical but not sure I want to go with a regular mammogram due to the X-rays. Is there anything else that would be better for me? I've heard of themography but some say it is not as good and around my area it is not used. Some say an MRI is excellent, but is expensive. Also, I have similar concerns re: bone density scans. Your thoughts and suggestions would be appreciated.

Stainless steel ice-cube trays vs. Freezing in plastic

QUESTION:

I'm looking for a stainless steel ice-cube tray. Do they exist? I am concerned about the plastic trays, I hear that freezing water in plastic can chemically change the water - is this true? How about the silicone rubber ice-cube trays. I've read your blog on using them for cooking, but what about for freezing? Thanks

POSTED BY JANET :: IDAHO USA :: 3:40 PM

DEBRA'S ANSWER:

Metal ice cube trays ARE available online, but they are not made from stainless steel. They are, and have always been, made from aluminum. Just type "aluminum ice cube trays" into your favorite search engine and many online sources will come up. Check the price comparison sites that come up too.

Elsewhere I have noted that plastic outgasses LESS when frozen, and ice cube trays are made from a fairly hard plastic, so I'm not real concerned about ice cubes being contaminated with plastic in the freezer. And I think silicone ice cube trays are fine too.

Metal trays last longer and don't crack or leak.

Natural Healing/Immune System Enhancement Herb

QUESTION:

Twelve years ago I found that Mother Nature had blessed my six acres in West Virginia with the healingist herb on the planet, Agrimony/Agrimonia (and many other names around the world). The ancient Greeks were the first to write about it's healing powers and now you can find dozens of research abstracts about them on www.pubmed.gov. The most important of these studies demonstrate that Agrimony repairs and generates new immune system cells and modulates immune system reactions to pathogens while correcting autoimmune system disorders. This ability to enhance immune system responses answers the centuries old question, how does it heal eye infections, liver disease, sinus infections, soar throats, ear aches, topical wounds, rashes, Herpes blisters, etc., etc.

You can find Agrimony teabags filled with 100% Agrimony leaves and stems as well as lots of info on how to prepare and use this wonderful herb at www.appalachianagrimonia.com.

natural thyroid medication

QUESTION:

I have had trouble with being hypothyroid ever since I became pregnant with my second child. I am 26 year old and because the problem did not clear up I am stuck taking a synthroid pill for the rest of my life. Everytime i go to the doctors they are changing my dosage because I am not even stable in my results. I still get tired a lot which is frustrating. I heard of a natural thyroid pill called "armour" and was wondering if anyone knew anything of this brand or another more natural way to getting around this synthetic medication i have to take.

POSTED BY VSIC4 :: NEW YORK USA :: 11:47 AM

DEBRA'S ANSWER:

Well, I'll tell you my experience with thyroid supplements.

I started taking the synthetic thyroid in 1990, so that's seventeen years now. My chiropractor sent me to an endocrinologist, who gave me a TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) test. It was "off the charts" so I was given the supplement. I had a very hard time getting a correct dose. After three years I went to another endocrinologist. He gave me blood tests and said, "You need to take a thyroid supplement." He couldn't even tell I was already taking it.

Synthetic thyroid supplements often cause side effects, for which doctors are only too happy to give other drugs, including psychiatric drugs.

I think I have now tried every thyroid supplement there is. I have been taking Armour thyroid for about ten years now, and it consistently works the best for my body. I have no side effects. It's all-natural, made from pig thyroid glands. If I weren't taking it, my body would be dead. I tried to stop once and got very ill. Fortunately, family insisted I go to a doctor, who told me I was three days away from being in a coma.

So you need to find a thyroid supplement that works for you. Do try Armour.

I've had a difficult time finding doctors who will prescribe it, however. To find a doctor who will write this prescription, go to http://www.armourthyroid.com/.

Readers, what are your experiences with thyroid supplements?

Debra :-)

DEBRA'S ANSWER:

I'm collecting info on various natural things that affect thyroid one way or another.

Here's an article stating the fluoride reduces thyroid function (this is widely known) and recommending kelp as a source of iodine to improve thyroid function:

The Center for Natural Dentistry: Cure for Low Thyroid Caused by Fluoride.

It is widely known that iodine contributes to thyroid function.

Pain Free

QUESTION:

Dear Debra,

About 5 years ago I my feet were in such pain, I could hardly walk. One day I was to go shopping in the mall with my daughters, and I had to tell them to go ahead and I would sit in the book store and look at books. I love looking at the natural health books.

Well, that day I found the Pain Free book you mentioned in your March 20 news letter, and saw that it actually talked about sore feet. I started the exercises that day, and it has literally changed my life.

I did the foot exercises first, and noticed that many of my other pains were going away. I come from a family with a lot of arthritis, and I was taking glucosamine , but have quit taking it, and I have never felt better.

I am 57 years old, and I walk better than I did when I was 30, and I do not take anything for pain any more. If I get a new pain I just do the exercise for that particular pain.

I recommend the book to everyone I know that is in pain. I also have read all the books that Pete Egoscue has written. I especially like Pain Free for Women. Now I usually do the maintenance exercises which only take about 20 minutes a day.

POSTED BY CVD :: MICHIGAN USA :: 9:58 AM

And my husband is still walking without his cane after starting the exercises. Over the weekend, he walked for five hours with me without his cane. That's pretty incredible for him!

Healthy Breathing Success

QUESTION:

I was so happy to hear you talk about Dr. Buteyko in your March 20 newsletter.

Nevertheless, he now has at his disposal an enormously useful technique, with absolutely no side effects, that he can use if he wants to cure his asthma again. The choice is his.

Thank you again Debra for posting this technique.

Make your own cardboard far infrared sauna

QUESTION:

I want a sauna. Those poplar and glass far infrared units are ideal but at $2,800---yikes. So how to sweat and get far infrared?

Mercola has a do it yourself sauna post at http://www.mercola.com/2002/aug/14/sauna.htm. You can buy the lamps from the hardware store and affixing it (not to plywood) but maybe to pressboard right? And can use in a small bathroom or closet or he suggests two refrigerator boxes stapled together. I LOVE this idea! How inert would the boxes be? Again I'd have an oven thermometer in and make sure I don't go above 110 degrees. And here again, boxes can have flaps cut in to regulate air flow/temperature.

You know how POOR most of us with MCS are ( I also have CFS). Make it yourself isn't ideal but would be acheivable by everyone that isn't on welfare.

If this is doable then everyone can have their own healing sauna.

Thank you,

Linda in Sarasota

POSTED BY LINDA TERZICH :: FLORIDA USA :: 11:57 AM

DEBRA'S ANSWER:

This sounds like a good idea to me. You could use whatever material you best tolerate to make the box.

Some cardboard boxes may contain formaldehyde, so find ones you tolerate. Sitting them out in the sun for a few days can help "detox" them.

Crest White Strips

QUESTION:

Hi Debra:
I've been wanting to ask you this for a while:
Crest White Strips, and/or other teeth whitening agents. Do you know anything about them? Are they safe? Can't really tell by ingredients as I remember, but didn't know if you had the inside scoop. I am most concerned as I do have an autoimmune illness that I have under control very well for the past twenty years and don't want to do anything stupid to mess things up.

I appreciate any advice from you and your readers.

Thanks.

POSTED BY DONNA :: MASSACHUSETTS USA :: 5:52 PM

DEBRA'S ANSWER:

The ingredients listed on the box of Crest White Strips are water, glycerin, hydrogen peroxide, carbomer 956, sodium hydroxide and sodium saccharin. These aren't particularly toxic in the amounts used. For example, sodium hydroxide is lye, which will burn right through your skin if you put a wet lye crystal on wet skin, but it is very diluted in this formula. Sodium saccharin used to be thought to cause cancer, but has since been found to be safe. Glycerin can be made from petrochemicals or vegetables. In this case, it's probably petrochemical.

Crest Whitestrips are thin, flexible strips coated with a tooth whitening gel, whose active ingredient is hydrogen peroxide, which is the same substance dentists use to whiten teeth. The reason you would use the strips instead of just putting hydrogen peroxide on your teeth is that the hydrogen peroxide needs to be held against the tooth for a period of time. The strips are designed to conform to the shape of your teeth, keeping the whitening gel on your teeth for 30 minutes at a time.

I don't find this product to be particularly toxic to the degree that I would recommend against it for an average person. That said, if the glycerin is made from petrochemicals, it might be something you might not want to risk with your autoimmune condition.

Readers, what are your recommendations for natural ways to keep teeth white?

Heating Pads or Other Heat Sources for Relaxation and Pain Relief

QUESTION:

I experience muscle tension and pain in several areas of my body, and one of the treatments recommended to me is the apllication of heat.

I have a hot water bottle, but this doesn't work well for neck or shoulder pain.

I'm looking at getting an electric heating pad so I can use it for pain relief while I'm lying down. What are the pros and cons of electric heating pads from a holistic health and environmental perspective? They're made with an automatic shut-off feature nowadays, so I'm not terribly worried about fire hazards.

Any other options you can suggest?

Many thanks.

By the way, I love your Web site, and consult it regularly. The Green Living Q&A blog is a great idea, and I was pleasantly surprised by the direct nature and helpfulness of reader comments.

POSTED BY ROBIN :: VIRGINIA USA :: 5:07 PM

DEBRA'S ANSWER:

Heating pads are generally made from synthetic plastic materials, and are full of electric wiring that generate electromagnetic fields (if anyone wants to comment more on the health effects of EMFs from heating pads, feel free). Heating pads also will not biodegrade at the end of their useful life.

Instead of using a heating pad, I recommend a natural heat pack. They have natural fiber covers and are filled with various natural materials. You heat them in the oven or microwave and then the heat transfers from the pack to your body when placed on the afflicted area. These are renewable and biodegradable, and have no electromagnetic fields. And because they are filled with small bits, they conform exactly to hug body parts with their warmth.

The first one that came to mind was the salt-filled sachet at Himalayan Living Salt. It's a 100% cotton pouch filled with "The Original" Himalayan Crystal Salt, which gives the unique healing benefits of the salt as well as comforting heat.

Dreamcraft makes heat packs in several sizes and shapes from cotton or organically-grown cotton, filled with organically-grown flax seed, rice, millet, buckwheat hulls, and lavender. Each is custom made, so they are happy to make your pack to your specifications.

Natural Pack has heat packs in several different styles, filled with "a grain product."

Self-guided.com has heat packs covered with cotton flannel and filled with flax seeds.

There are a lot more to choose from. Simply type "natural heat pack" in your favorite search engine.

Liver and Kidney Detox

QUESTION:

Do you have any special natural remedies to detox the body......the liver and kidneys??? I think sometimes feeling fatigue all leads to a good cleansing of the liver....getting it to be strong and flushing out all the toxins! Thanks!

POSTED BY B. K. :: ALABAMA USA :: 12:00 PM

DEBRA'S ANSWER:

I've used the Kidney Rejuvenator and Liver Rejuvenator products from Peter Gillham's Natural Vitality and they were very effective.

I started taking them after I read an article by Peter Gillham called "The Body's Filter" (this is not posted on their website, but I think they would send you a copy if you asked). It tells how our bodies have specific organs whose purpose is to purify the blood and organs to keep toxins of all kinds from building up in the body and causing disease.

The kidneys, among other functions, are one of the main organs that filter toxins out of our blood. But I suspect that for most of us, our kidneys are not doing their job. Kidneys can be damaged by poor diet, stress, and chemical expsosure, reducing their efficiency. When our kidneys are damaged, they can't filter out the chemicals we are exposed to and they build up in our bodies. So one of the best things we can do to help our bodies withstand the chemicals we are exposed to is to have strong, well-functioning kidneys. The kidneys and liver work together to remove toxic chemicals from the body, so both need to be supported.

When I read this, it was like a light bulb went off in my head. Of course! If we want our bodies to better tolerate the chemicals in our environment, we should strengthen those functions in our bodies that process them. So I started taking Kidney Rejuvenator and Liver Rejuvenator and they made a big difference in my body. My husband took them too and they helped him. They are completely natural, made of a blend of herbs (not organically grown).

There may be other similar products on the market. I know these worked for me. And other vitamins I have taken from them were effective too.

Both kidneys and liver process toxins and need to be cleansed for good health. I definately think you are on the right track with this.

Debra :-)

Saunas

QUESTION:

Thanks for all your excellent work. I have a couple of questions about saunas. First, other than relaxation felt while actually in the sauna, what are the health benefits and how often and for how long does one need to be in a sauna in order to sustain such benefits? Second, how concerned should one be about EMF radiation etc. from the sauna's electric heater? Thanks very much for your advice on these matters.

POSTED BY D.C. :: UTAH USA ::

DEBRA'S ANSWER:

The main health benefit of saunas is that they cause your body to sweat, and sweating is one of the major routes for the body to eliminate toxins of all kinds. Sweat has been used for physical and spiritual benefits for centuries and all over the world. Sweating is also considered to be the best method for removing heavy metals and toxic chemicals from the body, so it is a good procedure to be familiar with in our chemical-laden world.

Rather than give you exact instructions here in my answer, I'm going to refer you to some websites see links below that will give various protocols that you can choose from. It's very important to follow these protocols, as sweating releases water, fat, and minerals from your body along with the toxins, and these essentials need to be replenished. The amount of time spent in the sauna depends on your physical condition. You may need to start with short sessions once a week and build up to a daily sauna.

Your question about EMFs...in general, the further away you are, the safer you are. But that doesn't have to be far. It can be as little as three feet. You can get a very inexpensive $20 tester called an E-Field Detector online at Price-Pottenger Nutrition Foundation Online Bookstore or in local Radio Shack stores. It chirps if there are dangerous levels. So you could test it yourself quite easily.

But there are also different kinds of saunas. Several of the websites listed below refer to a far-infrared sauna that can be made inexpensively using ordinary heat lamps. These apparently are more beneficial to the body and more energy-efficient, as they heat the body rather than the surrounding air. These may be lower in EMFs than the standard sauna heater.

In general, in assessing risk, we often need to balance the potential benefits against the potential harm. I would take some EMF readings, but I would venture to say that the long-term benefits of removing toxic chemicals from your body--especially if you are ill or have had a major chemical exposure--would outweigh the relatively brief exposure to EMFs.

About This Blog

The purpose of this blog is to share information on "green living," which includes living in a healthy and nontoxic manner, as well as living in a way that is better for the environment.

Appropriate posts include questions about specific products or ingredients, where to find particular products, how to do or make something yourself, and any other aspect of living. You may also post anything on the subject you think would be of interest to readers, including data about health or environmental effects of products, products and websites you like and want to recommend, where to get good deals on purchasing green products, and the like. Please share your experience.

I personally will answer all the questions or invite other knowledgeable people to answer and I will review all the posts as they come in. I have created this blog so everyone can post and we can all learn from each other.
