Forest Stewardship Council-Certified FenceQUESTION: I live in the Miami area and am trying to locate a place where I can buy a shadow-box or similar style fence for my yard that is constructed of sustainably harvested wood and/or certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. Although Home Depot has a corporate policy to support this concept, no one in the Home Depot stores knows anything about it. I have also called a local lumber company but they don't offer this type of fence material. I'm willing to pay more for a product that I KNOW is made from sustainably harvested wood, but have become frustrated trying to locate a company that sells it. Can anyone help? Thank you very much. The Forest Stewardship Council website has a page to help consumers locate FSC-certified products, but they only list manufacturers and say you have to ask your local retailers yourself.
So, readers, how are you finding FSC-certified products in your local areas? Are you having any success finding them? Debra :-)
COMMENTS: Cindy,
The Home Despot does indeed stock FSC lumber. The 'on floor' knowledge of most of their products, however, is spotty at best. It's a bit of a conundrum for them, originally they promoted the idea that everyone they hired was a former tradesperson or expert in their field. How many $50 an hour plumbers do you know who would rather work at HD for minimum wage?
The best way to find it is to look for the FSC logo, either on the display or usually stamped right on to the lumber (you can see the logo at Debra's link to the site). My local HD stocks FSC pressure treated 2 x 4, 4 x 4, trellis, cedar in various sizes, and pressed strawboard shelving. Nobody on local staff knows it's there.
The biggest problem lumberyards face is a sorting issue. Again, many do stock FSC product, but don't have the lay-down space for 2 separate piles of each size of lumber. Sometimes going into the actual yard and looking for the logo is the only way, though the boys don't always smile for you when you ask for the 10th, 11th and 17th board in the stack! ;)
Keep asking, because it is awareness and consumer demand that will 'bring it to the top of the pile'.
