Cleaning a Humidifier

QUESTION:

Debra,

My doctor recommends I clean our baby's cool humidifier with bleach and hot water. I do not use bleach for anything else because it is so toxic. Do you have any recommendations on how I can clean the humidifier and remove any mold in a less toxic way?

DEBRA'S ANSWER:

My recommendation would be to use hydrogen peroxide instead, which will kill bacteria, but I don't have personal experience with this. Readers? Your suggestions?

Debra :-)

COMMENTS:

I have never used bleach to clean my child's humidifier. I don't think that is safe.

Peroxide is a good choice, be sure all surfaces are covered and use a cloth or a small bottle brush to get to all surfaces. I have used alcohol and it worked well.

Whichever you use, be sure to rinse all parts thoroughly.

COMMENT FROM DEBRA: I don't recommend using rubbing alcohol (made from petrochemicals), but vodka would be fine.

Hi everybody! The first thing I thought about was immersing it in vinegar for one night and rinse it with sterile water the next day.

Then I searched on the web and this is an idea that I found, I hope it helps!

Place a small handful each of dried lavender, rosemary, sage, rue and mint in a large jar, and cover completely with organic apple cider vinegar. Cover tightly and set for six weeks. Strain into a spray bottle. Whereas no home can be made to be sterile, spray the powerfully antiseptic Vinegar of Four Thieves recipe in areas of concern, such as on cutting boards and door knobs, always making sure to avoid your eyes.

For those of you who speak spanish you can find wonderful recipes at www.boticabuela.com I just love it!

Happy New Year!!
