Off-gassing from new TV

QUESTION:

I purchased a new flat-screen tv for my bedroom, but the smell is bothering me. I am deciding between returning it altogether or putting it in the garage to outgas (and maybe put it in my son's room later). I know people have different sensitivities, but how about how long would it take for the tv to stop giving off an odor?

Thanks,

DEBRA'S ANSWER:

Depends on the tv. The more you run it, the faster it will outgas, as the heat speeds outgassing.

COMMENTS:

We just went through the same thing with a new tv. It took about 6-9 months to off-gas. It is a 32 inch tv. It needs to be plugged in and running out in the garage at least during the day. It won't off-gass much if it isn't running. My husband just won a second tv and we just had it sitting to off-gass. After 6 months of sitting and then we plugged it in I could still smell it and it is very strong.

It took about 6 months for our new computer too. My husband received a new computer at work and wanted one like it for home so he could work some from home on a bigger screen. After it off-gassed for 6 months at the office we brought it home and tested it out and it was fine. Then we ordered the same computer new and had it sent to his office. Of course, we got permission from the boss to to do this and everyone was happy.

Ours smelled for about maybe 2-3 weeks. I would keep it plugged in somewhere. I used a filter (good one with large carbon filtering from Austin Air) in the den while it was still smelling. It won't really outgas well if not in use. If you don't have a filter, I would plug it in and put it in your sons room if he is not using the room. If not, I would put in an unused room you can close so it won't bother you.

thanks everyone...it never occurred to me that it had to be running to outgas!
