How Do I Prep an Oil-based painted wall for Water Based Primer & Paint?

QUESTION:

I would like to use AFM Safecoat Primer and Paint for my walls. However, I believe that the paint that is currently on the walls is an oil-based paint and I have been told by someone at AFM to use an oil-based primer, THEN use a water based paint. I am leary of the oil-based primer. Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, what was your solution? I would really like to use a water-based primer, if possible.

My husband is stumped on this one. Readers, any experience with this?

COMMENTS:

GiGi,
I can tell you what we did, but not sure it will work for the indoors if you have severe MCS. Our old house's clapboard had been painted with an oil based paint for years. When we decided to use a water based paint, we went to Sherwin & Williams and purchased their 100% LATEX primer and paint to go over the oil. The house was scaped and primed, then painted. It worked great, and it was done a number of years ago and still looks wonderful. The key is to use the 100% latex paint, but it also does offgas for a day until it dries. I'm not sure if you could use the Latex primer for your wall, then the AFM paint on top. Check with AFM to see if this would work. Hope this helps.
