Natural Play Dough

QUESTION:

I am working on a project for a museum and wish to use home made play dough. I need to know if this mixture is insect proof; someone told me the high level of salt would repell insects. The recipe I have for the play dough is: 4 cups flour, 2 cups water and 2 cups salt. If the salt does not repell insects should I use a varnish or lacquer on the finished project?

DEBRA'S ANSWER:

Common sense tells me this should be insect proof, but I don't have experience with this. Readers?

Debra :-)

COMMENTS:

Yes, it is insect-proof. However, it is NOT dog-proof. My dogs like salt (I now add a 1/4 teaspoon of celtic sea salt to a separate dish of water).

My mom and I made this for my niece and nephew to play with. Molly and Yenna gobbled them up before they were dry. :)

This is the same recipe I used for my daughters and my mother used in her preschool classes she taught. We never had trouble with insects with this playdough, but then we also threw it out when it became grubby and then made some more. The high salt content also helps keep down the passing of cold and flu viruses which was what we were more concerned about.

Does anyone have experience with coloring this homemade play dough?

on christmas holiday, me and my kids made homemade playdough ornaments with the same recipe. they were awesome , as to it was our first trial. then we painted it with christmas colors - just the bottle paints you get from dollar stores--- we painted it a few times-- just to make sure there are no white spots is showing---- and they were great!-- we personalized each ornaments by writing family members' names on it.

As far as coloring your homemade playdough, I wouldn't recommend the food coloring from the baking aisle (you can do your own scary research on those). For the Happy Fun Dough that I sell, I use plant and vegetable extracts. You can find them already made into liquids, or you can just buy beet root powder, annatto seed powder, turmeric, etc.
