sunlight alarm

QUESTION:

I recently moved from Southern California beach city to Pacific Northwest. I'm missing daily sunlight. Are progressive light alarm clocks effective, safe? Any suggestions for combating the gray days? Thanks. Take care.

DEBRA'S ANSWER:

I personally don't know anything about this, living in sunny Florida. But I know there are some readers in the Pacific Northwest, so let's see what they have to say. Readers?

Debra :-)

COMMENTS:

I puchased these http://mercola.com/forms/light_bulbs.htm last year and I just LOVE them. Last winter was the first winter that I didn't feel depressed and tired from the dreary cloudy days. We actually had a period of 30 days with no sun at all and everyone was talking about it, but I hardly noticed.
I believe the bulbs are backordered right now. I was going to buy more, and was told they would be available in a month.

Much has been written in recent years about the effects of light on mood. More recently much has been written about the importance of Vitamin D on overall health and there have been articles about Vitamin D and mood. I would suggest you search Google for Joseph Mercola, John Cannell- Vitamin D Council, Krispin Sullivan-- Naked at Noon, and read what they suggest about dosages. The current RDA of 400 IU is seriously under question. Also read what they say about sunscreen for the times when you are able to be in the sun.

I live in Southern California about 20 miles from the coast. When we do have grey days I feel very disoriented. I haven't tried the lighting suggested above, but I do feel better when I hang a old, worn yellow-orange dishtowel up where I can see it. Someday I hope to replace it with something a little more decorative. You may find that keeping certain colors within your line of vision is helpful.

I purchased this progressive alarm clock:

http://www.hammacher.com/publish/70460.asp?promo=homepage

Thinking it would help me wake up easier and not be shocked by a blaring alarm. I am a very light sleeper and the light on this alarm is not nearly bright enough to wake me up. The clock slowly lights up for 30 minutes before the beeping alarm goes off. I only wake up before the alarm once in a blue moon. The concept of waking up to light seems like it would work well, but the light needs to be much brighter than this particular clock.

Full spectrum lightbulbs seem to help me. They can be purchased at the local health food store.
