Stain resistant furniture

QUESTION:

I purchased new upholstered furniture for my home 6 years ago before I was aware of the toxic consequences. It is all treated with stain resistant chemicals. I cannot afford to get new furniture. Is there a way to deal with this? If I put on slip covers will that help? Thank you.

DEBRA'S ANSWER:

Apply AFM SafeChoice Lock Out, which was mentioned in the Q&A Offgassing of New Furniture as the correct product to use on upholstery fabrics.

COMMENTS:

Hi Debra,

We too bought upholstered furniture and had it treated with the stain resistant chemicals about 6 years ago...wouldnt it be outgassed after that time frame? Thanks Sandy

COMMENT FROM DEBRA: Stain resistant chemicals do outgass over time. The amount of time depends on the conditions and the sensitivity of the person.

I have read that the stain resistant chemicals are like teflon and have been found in something like 90% of the blood streams of those tested. We too purchased a love seat that we were concerned about. Also the polyester, or what ever fabric it is made from. My husband didn't like the feel of it on his skin so I purchased a 100% cotton slipcover that we wash frequently. Doesn't look as nice, but feels better. With the addition of a new house puppy we have added protection to prevent unwanted chewing and digging on the sofa.
