floor underlayment

QUESTION:

Is there any type of floor underlayment for wood or cork floors that is low or non-toxic? I have looked at cork underlayment, but it is expensive. Did you use any type of underlayment with your wood floors Debra? Thanks!

DEBRA'S ANSWER:

For those who are not familiar with "underlayment," it is a material placed under flooring, primarily for sound control and to act as a thermal insulation barrier. I haven't used it under any of the wood floors I have laid.

Readers, any suggestions?

Debra :-)

COMMENTS:

Several underlayments are low to nontoxic al in the 1/8" to 1/4" range (for floating wood and cork floors 1/8" is the thickness limit -- but not always -- see the installation details):

Cork: could be expensive but it is usually competitive; it comes in rolls 1/8" an 1/4" thick --- some has aluminum heat reflecting shield to add thermal value which can make it a better even Great value.

EcoTimber's ('Quiet Walk -- type) 1/8" underlay rolls of recycled fibers cotton and other is Low VOC no formaldehyde and comes with or without a moisture barrier.

Hi, I believe that 1/16" pure gum rubber sheeting
would do the trick as underlayment for a wood floor :)
A few different guys at flooring stores agreed!
