Local Green Guides

Though almost any green product is available on the internet, the best choice is always to buy green products and services made and sold as close to home as possible. By doing so, you use product more appropriate to your local region and build a strong local economy.

Here are some resources for finding green products in your area. If you know of a local directory that isn't listed here, please send me an about it and I will add it.

If you don't have a local directory in your area, take a look at what other communities are doing and start one!

Top Ten reasons to Think Local - Buy Local - Be Local

General

All Across America - Earth 911
Enter your zip code for local information on subjects such as where to recycle various items, business resources, events and contacts, and more (selection depends on what's available in your area--my zip code for example, lists the Florida Green Lodging program. You can also "select another location" and click on a map to find local resources in a place you might be visiting or want to move to.
All Across America - GenGreen
"Fine the green in everything" is the motto of this website. With over 25,000 listings in 354 cities across American, you can find places to buy food, transportation, recycling, green retailers, alternative energy, business services, carbon offsetting, baby products, green building services, healthy and beauty, pet care, travel, and more. Also green events are listed. Their stated goal is to be the most comprehensive and diverse resource available for people looking to live a locally-focused, environmentally conscious lifestyle." I think the operative word is local. It appears that local businesses can list themselves without first being screened. But that's OK. Just use your own judgement. And if they don't have a listing for what you are searching for in your area, they'll give you a national connection.
California - Los Angeles - Greenopia
A "Zagat" guide to green living in the Los Angeles area, this "urban dweller's guide to green living" is packed with local resources, rated for green-ness with 1-4 leaves. It goes beyond organic food, body care, and alternative energy to include restaurants, hotels, building materials, auto clubs, and many other products and services with green hearts or green twists. (I was a consultant to this guide, so I know a lot of research and care went into it.)
