Home Environment
Organic cotton bath towels. 100% cotton duck shower curtains and shower curtains made from hemp. The hemp curtains are a bit pricey, but will last longer. The website says "Hemp absorbs water up to 20% of it's weight, dries quickly, and resists mildew." Speaking to them on the phone, however, hemp can still mildew, depending on conditions, but mildews less than cotton. They recommend treating both cotton and hemp showercurtains before use with nontoxic AFM X158 "a clear, odorless defensive sealer designed to encapsulate surfaces which would typically be subject to mold and mildew attack. And recycled glass soap dishes and soap/lotion dispensers.

Nandina
Exceptionally soft, absorbent, luxurious towels made from "nandina," an innovative new yarn that is a blend of certified organic cotton and plantation grown bamboo "creating the luster of silk, the softness of aged cotton, and the durability and ease of care found in more traditional fabrics...We are proud that our towels have been certified free of harmful substances, often exceeding the highest standards set by Oeko-Tex, the world leader in textile testing for human ecology." I have felt these towels and they are the softest fabric you could ever want next to your skin. This fiber is especially appropriate for bath towels as it is resistant to bacteria, mold and mildew, easy care, and more absorbent than cotton. Click through for more information and to see colors, but the manufacturer does not sell retail on their website. They do give a list of stores across the country. You can order by phone from Luxury Linens at 847-277-1480. Ask them for Nandina towels.

All Hemp Sisters items are hand-made by working women's cooperatives in Kathmandu, Nepal that pay fair wages, provide excellent working environments, and support the local women's community through scholarships and employment opportunities."

Rawganique
An extensive selection of stylish basic clothing (and undergarments) for men, women and children, most made from European certified organically grown hemp, organic linen or organic cotton, some with natural dyes. Many items are exclusive to this site. "Our hemp products are, of course, sustainably made with no sweatshop, child, or underwaged labor involved at any step of the cultivation or manufacturing process -- this is something which we have taken pride in from the very beginning."

Bamboosa
Simple garments for men and women made in the USA from soft, absorbant, pesticide-free 100% bamboo fiber or high content bamboo fiber blended with organic cotton. Fabric processing uses no chlorine and only fiber-reactive dyes that use less water and less energy and generate less waste, nor do they use dyefixing agents, which often contain heavy metals and formaldehyde. All packaging materials, are made from 100% recycled paper with a minimum of 30% post consumer waste (PCW) and higher value PCW where available.

LotusOrganics
Clothing for women, men, and babies made from organic and all-natural fibers. "We also demand that all products that we offer...be refined, stylish, uplifting...and suit your lifestyle and your needs--from the office to the evening on-the-town, from the academic classroom to the yoga and exercise class, from casual to dressy...and supportive of our earth and the welfare of the peoples that produce them. We do careful and diligent research and offer only products that were produced at fair wages and using processes that are life-supportive for the workers and the environment." They also have a blog dedicated to all issues concerning organic clothing, including "eco-designers and fashion, environmental and social concerns, health and chemical sensitivities, organic garment costs and prices, and anything else in the wide world of organic clothing that grabs our attention."

American Apparel

CERTIFIED jean + branching habit
Jeans and shirts for men and women made from organic cotton. Designed to be comfortable and durable. "We supervise the production our clothing from the cutting to the finishing. All of our clothing products are made in the USA under U.S. labor laws. You can be assured that our products are made in sewing and production facilities licensed by the state in which they are made."

Shirts of Bamboo
Lots of shirts in many different colors and styles made from a blend of bamboo and organic cotton--for men, women, children, and babies. I visited this store and found the garments to be of good quality. The combination of the two fibers results in the best of both--the softness of bamboo with the durability of cotton.

ClothesMadeFromScrap.com
Casual clothing for men, women, and children made from 100% post industrial recycled cotton, or a blend of 50% post consumer recycled plastic bottles (polyester) and 50% post industrial recycled cotton.

Decent Exposures
100& cotton and organic cotton undergarments, comfortable clothing, and more, designed by women for women. Fabrics are prewashed. Bra comes in over 150 sizes, 15 colors, and 3 fabrics with latex-free elastic. Read selections carefully as some items are made from synthetic or blend fabrics.

Earth Creations Clothing
Natural clay is the dye for this natural fiber clothing for men and women. One day after a storm, one of the founders went for a bike ride and ended up covered with red clay mud. When, after years of washing, it was found that the color could not be removed, clay-dyeing was born. SImple styles are made from hemp, organic cotton or organic linen and dyed various "earth" shades (and other colors using low-impact dyes). T-shirts are embroidered with nature-oriented themes.

Earth Fashions
Casual clothing and accessories for men, women, and children made from 100% pre-consumer recycled fibers. "Clippings, cuttings and fiber by-products are bought throughout the US and Canada's cutting rooms and mills. These clippings and cuttings are then sorted to color, shredded, and spun into yarn. The yarn is then woven into fabric, washed and pre-shrunk, then cut into blankets, garments and accessories. By recycling these clippings & cuttings, we are preventing them from being used as non-biodegradable land fills."

Grateful Threads
Clothing for men, women, and children. Their site says they sell "handmade hippie stuff," but check it out even if this doesn't sound like your style. All the pieces are hand sewn in simple styles (like drawstring skirts). Some are made from colorful *vegetable dyed* fabrics. Some are made by "recycling" other garments, such as old jeans, and the traditional practice of *patchwork* is alive and well here. They will also do custom work at affordable prices.

Greenloop
A green fashion site, with modern, functional, stylish clothing, bags, belts, footwear, and jewelry for women, men and kids and organic beauty products "made by conscientious companies who are committed to environmental stewardship through their use of sustainable materials, practices, and innovative approaches to doing business in a socially and environmentally responsible manner...engage in fair trade where materials are imported and ensure workers are paid fair wages and safe, clean, regulated working environments, not sweatshops." Some items are questionable to me (like polyester fake fur) but there are enough good organic natural fibers to take a look.

Indigenous
Clothing and accessories for men, women, and children made from alpaca, organic cotton, silk, merino wool, and tencel, through a fair trade program. Their mission is "to elevate artisans in the poorest regions of South America to world-renowned status in the handicraft textile market while preserving their rich cultural heritage." They actively work with over 300 knitting and hand-looming artisan work groups. "In many cases, Indigenous utilizes the natural colors of organic cotton and fleece, eliminating the need for dyes to achieve complex color schemes within our fashion collections. Indigenous also develops low impact dyes which contain no heavy metals and are Azo - dioxazine compound free." I found a pair of gloves made by this company in a store and promptly fell in love with them. Very soft, thick organic cotton, beautiful deep plum color, excellent craftsmanship, at a price about half what they are charging in department stores for synthetic gloves.

"Our hemp products are, of course, sustainably made with no sweatshop, child, or underwaged labor involved at any step of the cultivation or manufacturing process -- this is something which we have taken pride in from the very beginning."

Harmony Art
In these fabrics, art meets nature in the purest organic cotton fibers and dyes. Patterns have descriptions like these..."Whispering Grass was inspired by the foliage in my backyard. All of the plants in this print are native to the California redwood coast. None of them were planted, they just grow of their own accord...Let it Grow was sparked from a picture of the ends of boards of wood stacked on top of each other. The balance of circles within squares and life within death make this more than a print to me...While having lunch outside one day, I noticed the sun shining through the leaf of a bulb. It created the most beautiful stripe. As soon as I got home, I scanned it in and recreated the rhythm. As with all my work, the credit belongs to nature."

The Bamboo Fabric Store

Yarns

Green Mountain Spinnery
A variety of organic wool and cotton yarns appropriate for hand knitting, weaving, and machine knitting. Their undyed yarns are well suited to home dyeing. Yarns have minimal processing, which "retains life" in the fibers. Their "greenspun" yarns are washed and spun with vegetable-based soaps and oils rather than the petroleum based products standard in the textile industry. No chemicals are used to bleach, mothproof, shrink proof, or remove chaff.

New World Textiles
Offers "spinning fibers for handspinners, handweaving yarns for handweavers, and cotton-specific spinning and weaving tools for both." Sliver for handspinning includes reclaimed denim from blue jeans, organic cotton, naturally colored cotton, organic cotton/linen blend, organic cotton/hemp blend, organic cotton/wool blend, plus other non-organic natural fibers. Yarns include organic cotton (unbleached, unprocessed or dyed with low-impact dyes), cotton/linen blend, recycled polyester, conventional dyed cotton, and rayon.

Cotton Clouds
Cotton yarns in every weight and color. Other natural fibers, too.

When I wear a cotton shirt, I don't have to think about the shirt--it is an extension of me. The fabric breathes like my skin breathes; I can feel the air and the radiant warmth of the sun.
