eco friendly face care and make-up

QUESTION:

Dear Debra and Readers,

Can anyone suggest some excellent lines for skin care that are non-toxic. I have explored many of the lines that are carried ion Whole Foods, but have not found anything that really works well and or doesn't make me red. Also, I would love to hear feedback on organic make-up lines, as I have not found a Line that I really love, yet, despite trying over a half dozen eco/organic lines.

Thanks,

DEBRA'S ANSWER:

Readers?

Debra :-)

COMMENTS:

I have been using Bare Escentials for years and I am very reactive and can't tolerate much. This make-up has never bothered me. You can order it online or they sell it at Sephora or Ultra II. Since I can't go into a store, I've always ordered online. It's a very safe product.

I was just speaking with someone at Aubrey Organics on the phone (checking to see if one of their shampoos would be good for my henna\'d hair), and we ended up talking about makeup.

She pointed out that even the mineral makeups sometimes contain some minerals that aren\'t really good for us... I think she mentioned talc for one. She told me that Aubrey Organics has a line of safer mineral makeups, made with silk powder, tapioca and rice starch, that are more sustainable than the standard mineral mix, and healthier for us too.

If a man might be alowed to add his two cents. I once heard some women rave about the Equinox company line of natural cosmetics called Natures Image. They were admittedly at the time multi level distributors with the company (it is now mail order only) but their testimony sounded and felt genuine. They reported their customers and they themselves loved it, specificaly stating it felt lighter and more comfortable than regular commercial makeup.

I've been very happy with Illuminare mineral makeup. I too have redness issues, and their liquid foundation covers it well. I haven't tried their lip products. They sell a cloth foundation applicator that is well worth the money for the ease of application.

I just started using a mineral-base makeup called Mineralogie. I quite like it. I looked at all the ingredients on Skin Deep and Mineralogie is less toxic than most!

Hello,
I am using a makeup from Whole Foods called Mineral Fusion...in a compact. It is working to cover the melasma I have, nice finish and texture...looks natural. Then on top I use a beautiful powder from Colore Science, pressed mineral pigment, which is supposedly pure. The finish is the most beautiful I've seen in any face product. Hope this helps. Serena

There is an absolutely wonderful company in my state called Cosmetics Without Synthetics. They sell everything you can think of make-up wise from many different companies worldwide that DO NOT contain toxic materials. You can order online and in their catalog it gives an explanation about each company and all products have the ingredients listed online. Another great thing you can order samples of most items.

If you really want to now the truth about your products go to www.skindeep.com This a data base from a non-profit organizaton called EWG.You can type in the company name or the toxic chemicals that are in your product and it will tell you what it does.

I myself can recommend a wonderful website of a Family owned business it is called www.coastalclassiccreations.com . The woman who owns and runs it used to work as an attorney for Estee Lauder. She got sick of seeing how people were being poisoned and no one knew. She to me is Hero among women making a true diffence in this Corparte owned world. Please think of the packaging too.I really hope that all of you tell other woman and men about this cause this has to stop now with the poisons. By the way there make-up is great.Peace and Awareness.

Honeybee Gardens Jojoba eye liner pencils are one of the safest ones out there. According to the Skin Deep database(www.cosmeticsdatabase.org) they rate a 1 on a scale of 1-10 and are NOT linked to cancer. This is the only eye liner I will wear!

They are only $6.99 and can be found at www.honeybeegardens.com under "cosmetics".

I am a retailer, both online and brick and mortar, and am extremely picky about ingredients in the natural cosmetics and skin care I'll use and carry. After lots of hours of research I choose to carry and use Lotus Moon and Lauren Brooke Cosmetiques for Skin Care. Lotus Moon has all-natural products for rosacea, eczema, acne/oil skin, dry and normal skin. Lauren Brooke Cosmetiques has an amazing Organic Facial Serum, Deep Sea Masque (tones and tightens pores, leaves your skin feeling amazing), and facial toners. Both lines offer trial sizes.

For the most natural makeup I've found, I would highly recommend Real Purity, Earth's Beauty and Lauren Brooke Cosmetiques.

Lauren Brooke Cosmetiques Mineral Foundation offers the full coverage you get with brands like Bare Minerals but without the Titanium Dioxide or Bismuth Oxychloride. All of their their powder foundations come with a small satin puff as an alternative way of applying vs. a brush, decreasing inhalation of the powder. Their products rate 0-2 on EWG's Cosmetics Database and they've recently added lip and eye liner pencils. They have a NEW Creme Foundation that will be available shortly that's foundation and concealer all-in-one! I've been trying it for a few weeks and been amazed at the coverage and yet how light it feels on your face.

The new Creme Foundation ingredients are simply: Zinc Oxide, Botanical Mineral Complex, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Organic Beeswax, (+/- Micas, Iron Oxides, Ultramarine)

Lauren Brooke Cosmetiques Mineral Foundation ingredients: Mica, Boron Nitride, vegetable Magnesium Stearate, Zinc Oxide, Silk Powder, Certified Organic Jojoba Oil infused with Flower Essences, Certified Organic Vegetable Starch, Pearl Powder, Certified Organic MSM, Comfrey-derived Allantoin, Certified Organic Neem Extract, Certified Organic Olive Extract, & Certified Organic Raspberry Extract (+/- Ultramarine, Iron Oxides).

I want a clean natural look with clean safe products using as few ingredients as possible. Here are my picks that I don't stray from:

FOUNDATION & BRONZER: I use Purely Cosmetics mineral makeup (www.purelycosmetics.com) for mineral foundation & bronzer but no occasion will also use concealer (Color Corrector),eye shadow (that can be used for liner too)and a finishing touch called Diamond Perfect Finish. The owner, Robyn, is super helpful and many times, sends instructions with your order. Yes, this is a woman-owned business!

The owner actually compares HER mineral makeup with other ones out there--pretty interesting considering there are many mineral makeups out there to choose from but KNOW they aren't all created equally. Go to the website and at the top you'll see BRAND COMPARISONS.

MASCARA: The only mascara I wear is made by Real Purity (realpurity.com). This company is just as the name specifies--real and pure! If I wore lipstick, I would choose Real Purity lipstick. I've become a lip balm girl and usually wear my own DIY coconut balm or Dr. Bronner's organic lemon lime balm.

For a moisturizer I use the NOW brand of glycerine mixed half and half with water.
I also use this mixture in place of hand and body lotion.

I am very happy with Lotus Moon Skin Care. The ingredients are pure and you may purchase sample sizes. It took me a long time to find a natural skincare line that does not use soy in every one of the products in its line. Most of the Lotus Moon do not contain soy or wheat. I couldn't be more pleased!

I heard from the owners of Cosmetics Without Synthetics company that several of the powder, mineral-based cosmetics contain nanoparticles. They said the way to tell is if you put some of the powder in your hand and it appears to melt into a liquid than it is made with nanoparticles. I'm not sure of all the research regarding this type of technology, but until I do I wouldn't use it.
